Welcome to the 2nd Createblog Writing Contest!
If you are interested in writing or trying something new, then this is the place to be. There will be 2 writing contests taking place at the same time,
(1) A Creative Writing Contest & (2) Mini-Contest (technical writing)
YOU CAN SUMBIT TO BOTH CONTESTS AT THE SAME TIME

(1)CREATIVE WRITING CONTEST

Background: This contest will give you the freedom to write in your own style about a selected subject. (If you want more of a challenge please go to the “mini contest”). This will be judged mainly on your creativity. The genres will range and probably will seem a little unorthodox at times, but the style is entirely up to you.
(Although, you will be asked to write poems, short stories, etc...The thing is when you write your “poem”, it doesn’t have to rhyme, or it can rhyme...You can express yourself as you normally would when submitting your own poetry here in other threads.)

Voting: Everyone WILL have a chance to vote, including the writers. Voting will run much like the “caption contest” is voted for. They will be placed in the hall of fame and there will be a voting thread that goes up with each contestants work numbered, and you post what number you think is best. Take a look at our past voting thread: Createblog Writing Contest 1 Voting Thread!

Winners: There will be a first place winner and also an honorable mention. The first place winner is the person with the most votes. The Honorable mention will probably be the runner up. Remember this contest is centered on creativity and being unique. Best advice I can give you is just be yourself and write how you usually would. (The entries I’ve seen around the createblog writing forum are fantastic I know you guys will do a great job. ) Winners will be placed in the “CB Writers Hall Of Fame” Createblog Writing Hall Of Fame
and receive a “Winners” button for their signature.

*Remember, if this contest isn’t your “forte” then you can always join the mini-contest, or wait for the next round since it will be different.-

Contest number (2)
The theme will be “ Three Words”. (Credit to Carrie for the wonderful idea)

I would like you to write a short story using these three words:
“Moon.” “Genuine” and “Scissors”

really random right? This is a chance to explore how creative you can be.
You want to write a short story (2-5 paragraphs) with those words somewhere in it.

* Here is an example

“She was beautiful. For a moment I lost myself and couldn’t take my eyes off of her. I forgot what I had to do, I forgot the time of night. “What is it?” she whispered to me, staring back. The cool air didn’t seem to calm me. The beautiful moon illuminated her face, every beautiful curve, her perfect lips. Her eyes were piercing. I cursed at myself under my breath. I could see her love was genuine, her beauty was pure. She had no idea. With the cold blade of the scissors pressed behind my back, I begged her to forgive me. “Derek, what’s wrong?” she whispered again. This wasn’t supposed to end like this, I thought to myself. I love her. Damnit, I love her! The wind blew through the trees, her eyes were piercing my heart. “I can’t do it”, I moaned. With a gentle thump the scissors slipped from my fingers and landed on the ground beside her.

Instead I took a gun and shot her through the heart.

^lol ok I’m kidding, take out that last sentence. :)

-ok so that’s pretty much it. I’m not the best writer, but I wanted to show you what you can do. And what this contest is looking for. Do you see where I used those 3 words and made them into a short story? That’s how it needs to be. However, yours should be longer then mine. 2-5 paragraphs. Read the Rules carefully! Remember, you can PM me with any questions.


RULES ON THIS CONTEST
(1) NO JOCKING
(2)The Deadline is on March 22nd All entries must be turned in
(3)Please, all entries for this contest should be no longer then 5 paragraphs, and no shorter then 2. Remember people need to read through everyones to judge, so try not to make it too long.
(4)Please PM all entries to either KissMe2408. If my Pm box is full PM them to Mipadi or MadameC
(5)When you are submitting please write in the title of the PM “Creative Contest”
(6)If you are interested in participating, please comment in this thread
(7)If your poem isn’t following the rules or theme then it will be disqualified.
(8)Just so you know, Your name will not be submitted with the poem when voting comes around. This is so we rule out the whole popularity thing, we’re strictly going for the best work. Of course if you win, then your name goes on it :)
(9)Writers will be able to vote when voting comes around
(10) Be sure to use those words atleast once You can use them multiple times if you would like. But they need to be used once in your story and be connected in some way. Don’t just have 3 random words stuck out of nowhere!

(2)MINI-WRITING CONTEST

Background: For now we will call this a “mini” contest, since the “creative” contest is the main one. This contest is aimed more towards “technical” writing. You will be asked to write in a certain style as well as a selected subject. As you can see this will be a little bit harder, but don’t let that stop you Each contest will have a different genre and style. So if this week isn’t your “forte” then wait for the next competition, but while your at it, give it a shot and try something new :) if not, then just wait and be the judge

The Theme of this contest will be, “Beauty”
The style of this contest will be in the form of a “ English (Shakespeare) Sonnet ”

*don’t be alarmed It’s not that difficult.
A Sonnet has 14 lines, and has a specific rhyming structure to it. (A question was asked about using Iambic Pentameter, and yes you must use it! Go to this site to learn what an Iambic Pentameter is: http://newmedia.colorado.edu/Content/vc/shakes1/iambic.html )

Iambic means the stress is on the second syllable, i.e. good-bye. Pentameter shows us that a line has five "feet" or clusters of two syllables adding up to ten syllables in a line. These "feet" are marked like this

hello | hello | hello | hello | hello.

Now that you know what a Sonnet is, Here is what makes it an "English (Shakespearen) Sonnet:

The form consists of three quatrains and a couplet
(remember we did couplets in our last contest).
(quatrains are four line stanzas of any kind, rhymed, metered, or otherwise.)

Here is the rhyming pattern:
a-b-a-b c-d-c-d e-f-e-f g-g.

I will make it easy for you Look further for an easy example, and I’m sure you will catch on!

Here is an example of an ENGLISH (shakespearen) Sonnet.

Shakespeare's Sonnet 116, illustrates the form:

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.

(^1st quatrain, see 4 lines See the pattern? A (minds) B(love) A(finds) B (remove)

O no, it is an ever fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wand'ring barque,
Whose worth's unknown although his height be taken.

(^2nd quatrain, 4 more lines , pattern is C (mark) D (shaken) C(barque) D (taken)

Love's not time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.

(^3rd quatrain, yep 4 more lines Pattern is E (cheeks) F (come) E(weeks) F (doom)

If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

(^Here is the couplet at the end. It should rhyme. A couplet is like this:
"There once was a boy named Bob
And unfortunately he was a Slob. "
See Pattern : G (proved) G (loved.)

So you did it :
A-b-a-b
c-d-c-d
e-f-e-f
g g


Make sense?

I'm sorry I didn't address that.
The definition of a sonnet is "a poem of fourteen iambic pentameter lines"
The English Sonnet you will be writing uses these 14 iambic pentameter lines and splits it up into 3 quatrains and a couplet at the end (see example in main post). Remember the quatrains can have different rhyming schemes.

Sorry I didn't address it above but yes, it has to be done in iambic pentameter.

The date is March 8th, and I realize today is the deadline for the writing contest. However, I only recieved 1 entry, (Thank you Justin for getting it in on time!) Now I understand you all have school,
work, and such things so I've decided to extend the deadline to March 22nd. After that I def will not
be extending it any longer, and Justin's entry will be claimed as the winner. So you have 2 weeks left, please try to PM me your entry before then! (If you still care to participate!)
