For this tutorial, I will be using a picture of Gemma Ward:
1) After finding your picture, add a raster layer.
2) Go to Layers>View>Current only.
3) Use the Flood Fill Tool to flood the raster layer with a gradient [i used colors #000000 and #AE0E0A for mine].
4) Go to Layers>Properties, and set the Blend Mode to Lighten.
In the end, it should add a little color to 'intensify' it. :D
