Well, here's a handy tutorial for making a grungy background or banner for your Xanga/signature/whatever.
STEP 1: Make a new document with whatever dimensions you want (I used 500x500) and a white background. Press D to reset your colors.
STEP 2: Click on the Gradient tool and use these settings:
STEP 3: Use the Gradient tool about 15-20 times until you get something looking sort of like this:
STEP 4: Go to Filter -> Render -> Difference Clouds and press Ctrl+I to invert the colors:
STEP 5: Press Ctrl+L to bring up the Levels menu and input these settings to get something like this:
STEP 6: You might notice that some areas look a bit weird. Don't worry. Go to Filter -> Stylize -> Find Edges, and then to Image -> Adjustments -> Desaturate, and you're done. Your image should look similar to this:
It takes some practice to play around with the Gradients and such to get it right, but the results look pretty good. Enjoy.
