Making brushes out of pictures

in this tutorial, i will teach you how to make a brush out of a picture. this tutorial will probably work best adobe photoshop 7, since that's what i use.

step 1: open up a picture of your choice.

step 2: for that painting/drawing type look, go to Filter >> Sketch >> Conte Crayon and use these settings:

your picture should now look something like this:

step 3: select the magic wand tool.

select all of the black on the image. to do this, just click on a black/grey part with the magic wand tool. if there's more than one black spot and they're separated, keep clicking while pressing "shift" until all of the black is selected. (pretty much anything that isn't white) like so:

go to Edit >> Copy. open a new document, transparent bg, 300 x 300.

go to Edit >> Paste. erase any edges you don't want. then go to Edit >> Define Brush. name the brush and then you're done! here's a finished product of what this can be used to do:
