Tutorial - PSD cutting
by xuperpinoy

Definition - PSD has many definitions but the most common one in the graphics business is it is a picture with the original background removed so another background could replace it.

Prologue - Before we begin, I want to tell everyone in creatblog that there are a lot of ways of cutting PSDs but this one i'm about to show you is probably the easiest and fastest way to cut a picture. This whole tutorial is by my experience and isn't ripped from any site or person. All images were taken by me and all the cutting was done by me. The program i used for cutting is Adobe Photoshop. This is my very first tutorial so if you read/use it, i hope you'll post a comment so i know that i'm helpful and that i should create some more tutorials.

First Step - (a)Open/(b)Create a canvas
option a - open up your version of Adobe Photoshop. Go to File > Open and select the picture you want to cut.
option b - If you don't have a picture on your computer open up your internet and find one. Click the right button on your mose and copy the picture. Now, open up your version of Adobe Photoshop and go to File > New. Usually the size automatically switches to the picture's size but if not you can do it manually. Go back to where you found the pic right click the picture and select properties look at the dimensions and insert it by order as the canvas size. Paste your picture on the canvas by going to Edit > Paste

Second Step - Fill with green
Change your main color to a light green. You can do this by click the first color box on the tools window. Create a new layer by going to Layer > New Layer, name your new layer as "Background" and change the tab color to green so it'll be easier to recognize. Then fill the new layer with green by using the paint bucket tool. Drag the new layer under the original picture so you would onloy see the real picture and none of the green one.

Third Step - Pick your tool
Now, like i said there are a lot of ways to do this, the most common way is the eraser but instead we are going to use the polygonal tool. Click the polygonal tool and check the settings on the top of the window. Make sure the feather is on 0.4-0.5 and anti-alias is checked.

Fourth Step - Zoom and Cut
Zoom to 400%-500% by clicking the maginfying glass 4-5 times, each click equals a hundred. Then begin to cut around the picture you want. It doesn't need to be perfect as the feather will make it curvier for you but don't make it look too jagged cause it's not going to look to well when you're done.

Fifth Step - Finished
Finish cutting around the picture and click the "delete" button twice. If done properly the picture you just cut will have no real background and will have the green layer showing up around it instead. Now you can either use it on a splash you are making or save it for later. While saving it for later make sure you save it as .PSD so that the picture won't stick to the green background.

Extra Step - New Background
Now you could post it on a background you either made or got.

Epilogue - Well that's it. Now you know how to cut a picture. This will make it easier for you to create your own blend/poster/cd cover/ website a little more. Hopefully you find this tutorial helpful. Check out the createblog forum for more tutorials.

+ You could just check 'Only web colors' and choose a bright green color. ^_^ And if there's bright green on your picture, you may want to use a different color. Black or white work well usually. I use a bright pink most of the time though.
+ If there's large areas of the same color, the magic wand can come in handy. If there's large areas of background that don't have any purpose, and don't have anythin important in them, you can simply remove them with the rectangular marquee.
+ After you finish cutting out the image, you may want to delete the green layer and then save it as a .png with transparency or a .psd, according to your prefrence.
+ If you make small mistakes, use the 1px eraser to fix them up. [/size]
