hey guys biggrin.gif i'm doing this summer packet for an honors geometry class i am planning on being in freshmen year of HS (next year) and i'm stuck on a problem. it seems soo simply.. yet when i try to figure out it seems complicated. please help me asap cause i need to send in the packet soon (before i leave for vacation)

DIRECTION: SOLVE THE SYSTEM USING SUBSTITUTION OR ELIMINATION
EQUATION 1: x^2 = y + 6
EQUATION 2: 5x = y

(note: "^2" means squared)

i already firgure out that by substituting "y" you would get:

x^2 = 5x +6

but now where do i go from there?

You then subtract the 5x+6 so that it reads x^2-5x-6=0. Then you factor that out (it comes out to (x-6)(x+1)=0). Then you make each factor equal to zero and solve for x.

^ lol yeah thats what i thought but then
you get :

x=# y=#
x=# y=#


like two sets of numbers. are you supposed to?
and like how can you group it (x,y) (x,y)

i hope that makes sense. thats the only part that confuses me cause i thought there was only one solution to a system (only one x and one y)

Hmm, well I think there can be multiple answers depending on how many variables/equations there are. So, there might be 2 answers.

it becomes a (x,y) (x,y) problem.

I was good at these so I think this is right.



I totally forgot how to do these. But Your answer is (x-2)(x-3)...You will be needing these I assure you. You do pretty much what Linke said.

You made me realize how much I miss math...

LOL I loved those problems they are so much fun! LoL but when they make you use substitution I hated it. I had to show my work and I'm not very good about that. I could do it in my head but I couldn't write it out. It made me so mad!
