but my friends are seeing something different...one person saw an old layout i had on there. another sees something completely different.

i'm wondering what the heck is going on. can anyone help me?

this is what i think. maybe your friends are viewing it in firefox. the screen shot you provided i can only see it using IE but in firefox i dont see the background color and the border colors.
