I raised my cup of ginger ale
Pale faced but smiling in the presence of friends Whom I'd been with since I was a girl no taller my waist now For I am quite short. We laughed and clicked our fancy tall glasses Singing a song doubtless we'd make fun of later Replacing the corny lyrics with our own more plausible ones I got up and retrieved the bottle again and stood against the counter Filling my glass when he came through the backdoor No one noticed him but he put his hands on my waists and gently turned me around to face him He pressed his forehead against mine and took my hand Studying my fingers and joints and wrist He said so softly it made my body shiver in fear "Where were you yesterday, why didn't you answer the phone I gave you?" He stood back, still holding my hand, the anger in his eyes now so apparent I wondered if they wouldn't boil from his sockets with heat Flames danced in them and he raised his voice a little, still maintaining control "Answer me, Yvette, or it will be your wrist, and then your back when we wed." I looked to my friends who had quieted some Few had noticed Christoph was there daring not to stare but glance every other minute nervously at him. He pressed my wrist back and twisted my arm, standing in front of me now so they couldnt see, he backed me out the door into Tessa's garage and shoved me into a pile of dirty laundry on the floor. "I'm sorry Christoph. I got caught up." "You think I don't know you plan to run away with Micah? You've been eyeing my son like a piece of chocolate ever since he came back from Brazil." Her eyes averted. Never before had Christoph acted so agressively. Spoken so openly. He was her next door neighbor. She but 18, her parents approved of Christoph's courtship. Even though she'd refused him many times. "He's being kind to me, that is all." He slapped her, and her head flew back. I did not cry out, but merely sat there, not even raising my own hand to my cheek. I feared if I did, he would simply become angrier and grab me again. But I was wrong. My not responding to this treatment tempered him greatly. Christoph turned around and closed his eyes regaining composure again. He didn't understand the power she had over him to make him act so. He'd been in a meeting and his eyes had fallen on the compact he'd taken from her purse days before that lay on his desk. He'd been worried that morning and then had to rush to a meeting. Now that he was in his building, it only worsened his anger that she had not contacted him. Suddenly he turned back around and grabbed her. He picked her up and carried her to his car over his shoulder Caring not that people out on their porches were watching. Yvette was his, and no one could stop him from having her. |
