QUOTE(touch my monkey @ Jun 24 2005, 9:23 AM) and about the movies.. go to japan or something and all you see are asian people. do any white people star in their movies? err..yea. and uh..heard of jet li and jackie chan? ![]() Whoa, this topic is sure damn depressing, but a comment from me about what you said above, is that the matter depends on the situation. The Japanese movie market is smaller than the American market, it's common sense. It seems that in my opinion the reason as to why Jackie Chan and Jet Li star in a ton of American movies is because of the question, who wouldn't want to be in Hollywood? Why are they successful? The American film companies know that their popularity at home allows them to break into the Asian Market, thus they get a good healthy profit from it. They know they will be successful, afterall they are Jackie Chan and Jet Li, they only do martial art movies and that is what they do best, people are bound to watch them, they are assumingly the most successful in China and Hong Kong and other parts of Asia. The Americans already started selling their films a long time ago, the Americans seem to have realised that their power through attractting the Asian market and other fellow American viewers through Martial Art films was eccentric, this is because of Bruce Lee. If it weren't for Bruce Lee, the Americans may not have developed hugely successful action films such as the Matrix, it may not have even existed. This points me to how such a difference in popularity and a unique selling point can help make a difference as to why there are not many white people in Japanese movies. The Japanese are extremely successful business people, some of the world's most important business theories originates from the Japanese. In my opinion, the Japanese would like to have more white people in their movies, however, these people must have the potential to attract the Japanese Audience,For example, if Tom Cruise was to act in a Japanese film, and the film being released in Japan first, it would surely have a significant impact, who hasn't heard of Tom Curise? If the Japanese was to release a film with some new white guy that no one has heard about, the film may become a total disaster, however if that person had the potential to add something special into the film, then it isn't really a problem, in fact I'm pretty sure, that the Japanese people will be pushing this person into more Japanese based films. But really, what you have said above about Jackie Chan and Jet Li starring in American movies, it's like as if A famous American like Tom Curise were to really to star in a Japanese Film, would the Japanese be able to pay his contract and would they they reject a hugley budgeted American Hollywood film to a Japanese film? The Japanese market is so much smaller, the actor could easily make a mess of it, it's too risky. Also Jackie Chan and Jet Li only do Martial Art movies and this is their unique selling point, can you really see them in a love/drama film? In Japan, what can someone like Tom Curise provide, that the Japanese can almost copy for a cheaper price, they have Takeshi Kaneshiro. I personally love Japanese films and Actors, and I respect them for the quality of movies they make for the limited budget they have, look at the Grudge and the Ring ,though the Americans made a mess of the Ring, it still engrossed higher profit than the original in it's first week of showing, that is the power of the American market comapared to the Japanese. |

DIE WHITE GIRLS!
... ![]() ![]() But really. At my old school, other races outnumbered white kids, like, 5 to 1. We were a minority. They all hated us. It was kind of awkward. |

People do respect white people. I mean, a LOT of celebrities are white and people respect them a lot. It's just that a lot of them have bad reputations. There's no racism toward whites where I am, considering.. everyone's.. white.

actually, i find it pretty ironic when black people at our school try to make fun of us, and then when people fight back, they bring up slavery and segregation and talk about how underappreciated they are, when inm fact they weren't alive then and are a good deal more racist against us than we them. (ie, jokes about white kids being ignorant. he can't dance because he's white. i'm going to kick you out of your seat at the lunch table just because you're a white girl and a good deal smaller than me <---actual experience)

I don't hate white people. But check the white peoples history. I mean Indians, african americans, asians, mexicans and arabs. They were all discriminated by the whites.

now, i understand the need for equal rights and all, but you can take political correctness too far. for example, that version of cinderella starring brandy was ridiculous. there is no need to have to make every single character a different race just to include everyone

In two movies! But anyway, rebutting to your comment, please read what I have WRITTEN, anlayse my comment, you should notice my use of speech does not suggest that the whites are dominating everything...blah blah blah, your comment was about white people not being in Japanese movies - i'm talking in my comment wbout how this situation works out economically and how it psychologically determines what one thinks,e.g how they cast people in Japan for movies. Please...I am 1/5 Bristish 1/5French 1/5 Chinese 1/5 Korean and a 1/5Japanese, I have relatives all round the freakin world that I visit them at least once every 3 years, I've lived in 6 countries during my life, and I live to speak 11 different languages. I lived in 2 european countries, and I'm pretty damn sure I've seen a channel where there are white people. During my comment, my speech does not discriminate white people from asian people, if I was discriminating anything, it would be Hollywood and the Japanese Entertainment Association, they are what you call different organisations. When I use the word "American" and "Japanese" I was purely specifying the specific criteria those things belong too, in order to assist with your understanding, but clearly you must have misinterpreted and thought I was discriminating. I was also generating hypothetical situations, "for example", it could apply to anyone. Your comment "people are more into the media here than japan." has already answered what you were trying to ask," all you see are asian people. do any white people star in their movies?", what evidence is there that people are less into Japanese media. When I said the Japanese market is smaller, there are facts to prove it like the total sales generated etc which i am using to express my "opinion". By saying "people are more into the media here than japan." you can never show any evidence whatsoever, popularity cannot be measured as a number. People are alsways into medie, they don't have to show it, can't you have thought of this before? and ........ " all you see are asian people. do any white people star in their movies?" well do you know how they manage cast production, filming,....etc....these type of things can not be shown on a piece of paper, you don't know how they are going about making movies, the word "unmeasurable" is best to answer your topic, how do you know? Please in future, read other people's comments carefull and actually put some thought into what they are saying, it's almost like when you wrote "but have you seen a white channel?" this could have been offensive or not offensive to someone if they didn't think carefully what you wrote after that, I was firstly thinking " you must think I have no white backgorund", your comment would've been even more discriminating, if not, then it will be like insulting to those of only asian backgrounds. |

i go to a mainly black school where white people make up like...10% and i dont really feel any tension at all...even though i am the minority in that situation it's still cool...
but like....my dad and this hispanic man were up for the same promotion and they gave it to the hispanic man just because he was a minority...not because of his skills...companies are soo preoccupied with trying to not seem racist at all they start changing policies to appeal to all...its kind of funny because i mean...look at barbie...she used to have a brunette friend and a red headed friend to appeal to all hair colors....now she has one hispanic, one asian, and one black friend. i'm not saying that it's bad because of course all little girls want a doll like them to play with but it just shows how society is really shifting (at least a little bit) to equal out all people... also...the whole hating white people because the slavery thing is kind of silly....not only white people had slaves..plenty of other races did too...and in some instances...white people were slaves....i know that a lot of white people did but we dont really learn about the other people who had them....plus who do you think sold the slaves to the americans?....i just dont think it's fair to hate a whole race just because of the past because obviously almost all of us hate slavery now and would never even think of 'owning' slaves.....just like...just because your great great great great grandfather killed a man doesnt mean that you will too or that you approve of it.. |
