you stand there
in the midst of the night
wondering if they'll ever care.
it breaks your heart
knowing reality

glancing into the sky,
straining to see
you wonder when it's your time to die.
diligently,
you pray
hoping that today just isn't your day.

a gunshot echoes through the camp
and you clutch onto anything you can
