that is probably incorrect. I don't think the ps1 discs can fit in the PSP. maybe there will be ported ps1 games, but I don't think it is backward compatible with the ps1.

I don't think it has dvd/cd capability either. It uses proprietary discs, so how can a DVD/CD fit?

I'm for the DS. Pictochat is really cool! So what if PSP has a bigger screen, the DS has two! The DS will have better games as well.

I have no worries! I'm getting both!

I too thot it's too small to fit old ps1 and dvd's. But all the game mags are saying it's confirmed to run dvds for 3 hours on its batteries. so. meh.

I believe you are talking about UMDs, Sony's personal minidiscs, which will have ports of PS1 games as well as have movies on them, including the upcoming Final Fantasy VII movie.

And the projected battery life for it during movies is 2 hours, which is hardly enough to watch even most movies.

I go with the DS, better games, better battery, better functions, better price, and its sitting on my shelf right now, haha.

the psp is the obvious choice, but it'll burn a hole in your pocket, so might as well save your money and reserve a copy of psp. the estimated price of the psp is about $200 (just $50 more than the ds) and will be releaesd early 2005.

Ohh man. PSP or DS.

Double screen, great. But I'd actually want a larger screen over two small ones. ...& right now with spec comparisons, PSP sounds like it's just ahead of Nintendo.

Anybody wanna give a proper rundown on which is better? stubborn.gif

Info that I've found so far

Battery Life:

PSP: 4-6 hours for games.
DS: 6-10 hours on a 4 hour charge

Price (Japan):

PSP: $195
DS: $140

A note about the price, the PSP price is much lower than I expected. Either the PSP is using really really really cheap hardware, or Sony is selling at a loss to build hype. Also, although people brag about features for the PSP, many, such as the mp3 player requre you to buy additional accessories, such as a $30 memory card.

The PSP does have a larger screen and better resolution, better hardware. But, the DS has a touch screen. Think of the possibilities. This opens up a new style of game play, pretty innovative.

As for games, the only game I heard for PSP at launch is Metal Gear Acid. I've heard a slew of DS games coming out (many ports of nintendo games, and some new games that take advantage of the touch screen). And the DS is backward compatible with Gameboy Advance games.

If I had money (wahhh i'm poor, I can't afford either handheld), I'd buy a DS.

[edit]

OMG, DS is going to have Viewtiful Joe!

The psp applies to more gadget freaks rather than gamers. i am a gadget freak but psp sounds great... they are trying to fit too much into it... i mean come on ? a umd for movies??? like you can just buy a regular portable dvd player for 99 bucks at walmart.

the psp has a much more sexier design .... i believed that the DS would of had a very very sexy design... they could of made a better design seriousli cause i doubt thats the best they can do... watch in 2 years when the price goes down.. they are going to have a much sleeker and appealing design. just wait

but in games i hope they come out with much more games for the DS because i bought a gamecube and the games were crap and i love my gamecube cause it has those party games like mario party and mario kart d-d.

but over all i go for the DS.
its much cheaper. touchable screens. more for the younger generation. i mean come on not all 7 year olds are gunna be able to buy PSP for christmas. i doubt their mom would buy that for them.

How does the PSP fare ergonomically? I know a few people complained they got cramps trying to play fast-paced games on the DS.

I've read up more about the PSP and I don't know James, this time around Sony sounds like they've got the better offer =D

I think the UMD sounds quite appealing, with the ability to play movies, music, music vids, etc. You could argue that you can get a mini-portable DVD player or whatever, but what the hell kind of DVD player can play games and look as aesthetically pleasing as that.

For some reason, the DS touch screen doesn't impress me much at all. It's a touch screen! Touch touch touch touch touch... The wireless gaming is pretty damn cool though, I'll give em that.

& Yeah, a lot of people are surprised at the PSP's price, but come on, their biggest (and practically only) competition is selling at 150$. Anything above 200$ could be the main (and perhaps sole) factor in detering people from buying the PSP.

As for games, perhaps Nintendo is on the innovative side of that and as most of you say they have the 'better games,' but I doubt Sony will disappoint their fans in that area. Maybe not better in your opinion, but I'm sure they'll have good games nonetheless.

Ahhh yeah. So right now my eyes are turned towards Sony for my next handheld console. =X

psh.. why compete when yo can just get both?

lol, j/k. if i were to choose. it would be ther psp, cause its so sexy, and it plays video, and it does more. plus all the action/shooter/racing games are comming out on it. so... it all depends on what you fav. genre's of games are. ds is for... multi player fun games, while psp is for.. those one player racing/shooters. almost like comparing the ps2 with the gc.. actually.. the same thing.. @_@

oh, also.. the psp is online so yeah, check into that, cause i read about that earlier. i didnt see anything about ds being online.. just wireless

Which games are you talking about? The metroid prime cart that comes with the DS is only a demo, of course you'll finish it in a short amount of time.

You can do all of that with the DS as well. Except for the PS1 and PS2 part, instead, you get ports from various nintendo consoles.

You know, NFS Underground is being released for DS, and metroid prime hunters is an FPS. Also, the stylus is a pretty good tool for playing an FPS on a handheld.

DS + WiFi adapter = DS online

I've never tried my self, but I can see your point. The DS is kinda like the Game & Watch x 2, probably not as good as the PSP ergonomically. But we'll have to wait until March 2005 to find out, unless someone gets their hands on a Japanese PSP.

Unfortunately, the battery life on that thing will be atrocious. I've heard rumors that the battery dies out before the movie even ends. And technically, it's not a DVD.

Yes, the games out now do not fully use the potential the touch screen has. But we'll see, maybe down the line, we'll see some really cool features that the touch screen enables the DS to have.

I kept reading, and read a rumor that Sony is selling the PSP at a loss. The money will have to be recovered by software sales and other hardware (memory sticks, etc)

However, if someone codes an emulator (or steals the one that Sony made, Sony needs to send the emulator to all the developers AND the movie studios), this strategy may go down the drain, and Sony might lose a ton of money. Pretty risky.

You will see some games that will be released for both the PSP and DS. PSP has more 3rd party support, DS obviously has more 1st party support. As you stated, quality of games is solely an opinion though.

Haha, atrocious? [boo take it back] I'm guessing the estimated battery life is.. 2 hours? Which is right, that's not enough time for a lof of the movies out these days, but we'll see.

PSP offers multi-player gaming also, but we'll also have to see about that.

hrm.. you need the wifi adapter for it to be online? iono.. sounds like its going to be more money going into it for features that should already come with it. nintendo never gives you the full package at one time... i dun get that...

You know though, the PSP requires you to buy a memory stick to play music. Sounds like it's going to be more money going into it for features that should already come with it. Sony never gives you the full package at one time... i don't get that...

not that i disagree with you, but you really shouldn't just pick what a magazine says is better.

i chose that because based on the comparison that the magazine did the nintendo was better. Now, if the magazine had made it sound as if the psp was better, then that would have been my choice...
does that make sense??
