Letter of Intent
Why are you interested in becoming a staff member? What makes you deserve this position? What can you bring to the team? If you are considering more than one position, please write a separate letter for each one and specify.
I've long enjoyed writing, and am especially interested in journalism (particularly op-ed). I've long been involved with various student publications and feel that it would be great to help with the cB newspaper, as well as bring more attention to the writing forum. I'm a (somewhat) accomplished short story writer, as well as columnist for various newspapers, and I've always enjoyed writing quite a bit. I feel I could bring a fresh, honest perspective to the cB newspaper.

Reporter Applicant’s “Audition” Are you really reporter material? Write a short (quarter page to half page OR 6-8 sentences) story on a topic of your choice. If necessary, find a graphic to go along with the story. Include a title. Give credit for optional graphic.
Here's a short piece I wrote as a review for Kings of Leon's new album:
Kings of Leon brings fresh sound to rock

Lately I've been weary of modern rock music, which seems to only reward those who are good at mimicking other earth-shattering bands. With a lot of bands sounding like clone copies of one another, I was a bit apprehensive when I first listened to Kings of Leon's just-released second album "Aha Shake Heartbreak."

My apprehension was completely unwarranted. Kings of Leon turned out to be one of the best new bands I've heard in quite a long time. They have an uncanny knack of seemingly combining elements of many classic bands into a brand-new sound. Listening to this album, I was able to pick out pieces of The Strokes and The Vines in the guitar riffs, the melodic rock leads of Modest Mouse, the spunk and fast pace of The Toadies, and even the fun and humor of The Presidents of the United States of America.

Of course, I hesitate to even list these "sources," as I wouldn't want one to get the idea that Kings of Leon are just ripping off the best parts of contemporary rock hits. It's clear to me that many of these bands are most likely not influences of Kings of Leon, even though I quickly noted some resemblance to parts of their music. No, Kings of Leon clearly deserves more credit than that; they are an original band with a new and unique sound, even though their music relates easily to that of other musicians. They not only have excellent rhythm guitar riffs, but unique lead guitar and bass lines that combine with toe-tapping lyrics to shape the overall sound into something that isn't often heard in modern rock music.

One of the greatest things about Kings of Leon is the diversity of their music. "Razz," for example, features a light, melodic bass intro coupled with a clean, melodic lead guitar riff that could almost be described as whimsical. "King of the Rodeo," the album's second track, features the rhythmic vocals of Caleb Followill telling the listener to "Let the good times roll / Let the good times roll." Soft acoustic guitar strumming of "Day Old Blues" sets a melancholic yet relaxing tone. "Aha Shake Heartbreak" is an album that manages to deliver a wide range of music that still manages to tie together into a single defining style. Overall the record has a very melodic, relaxing feel that at times seems to invoke ideas of the 1970s or early 80s, yet still falls into the category of traditional rock music. While unique, the album is not so revolutionary that the listener won't be able to recognize it as music they know and love. The only downside I can find in Kings of Leon's music is that the lead singer's voice is almost as annoying as Billy Corgan's, but like the lead singer of the Smashing Pumpkins, somehow that voice moves from annoying to pleasantly unique in the context of the rest of the band's music.

I highly recommend that anyone interested in a unique band with a new sound not easily copied by other bands check out Kings of Leon's album "Aha Shake Hearbreak." I can assure you that any fan of modern rock will not be disappointed by this southern rock band.

Are you still accepting applications for reporters? Because you're no longer accepting editors && I wasn't sure if you're still up for applicants since you've already released a couple issues. mellow.gif

Letter of Intent
Why are you interested in becoming a staff member?
I had joined my school's newspaper before, it was slow paced && what they were doing just wasn't interesting to me. I could care less which teachers are new to the staff, but this is Createblog && I feel quite differently about it than schol. I thought being able to practice my writing skills && really put them up for more challenges would be a great way to contribute to CB, hey, I'm helping Cb && having fun, right? I love to write && it has always flowed naturally to me, more natural than algebra, that's for sure. This whole impression to me is a euphoric && amazing oppurtunity to get to know Cb && its Cbers to a higher extent.

What makes you deserve this position?
I've always felt that writing came easily to me && I would never have to struggle in it, not unless I wanted to hone my skills. I also enjoy writing, so that's just another bonus for me. I've practiced much writing over the years, from persuasive essays to just entertaining short stories, I'm quite adaptable if the situation calls for such.

What can you bring to the team? I can bring a wide variety of new concepts to contribute to the team's ever budding collection of ideas already. I'm not here just to have fun, I'm glad to help out anyone else whatever job it might be. Social, crazy, && never dull, those are just a few traits I carry. There will never be a single dull moment when for any of us with all the wonderful minds and personalities that are brought together. I hope to make everyone's experience working with me pleasureable && easy.

If you are considering more than one position, please write a separate letter for each one and specify.

Example of humorous bit:
Mortified doesn’t describe how Jane’s parents felt after meeting her boyfriend. He sported vile tattoos, swore, and just had a hostile air about him.
After he left, the mother said, “Dear, he doesn’t seem like a very nice person.”
“Mom,” Jane said, “if he wasn’t very nice, why would he be doing 500 hours of community service?” American Legion Magazine

QUOTE
Changes are Ready to Be Made

Our whole existence we have strived to create equality for ourselves and future generations in the U.S, but still homosexuals of both genders are discriminated and harassed because of their sexual orientation. I for one am all for homosexual relationships and think gays and lesbians should receive more rights. I believe it’s cruel when others discriminate against people because of their sexual orientation or anything else for that matter. We should attempt to tolerate others. Enough time has passed, and I know changes are ready to be made.

I understand completely why others may frown upon homosexuality, but being U.S citizens we have a right to express ourselves. I have compiled facts to increase your knowledge on this issue. In several states, lawyers are battling to legalize marriage for homosexual couples. New Jersey, New York, and California are just a few. A judge has recently turned down the request to ban same sex marriages, but the case is to be reviewed by a higher judge. Obviously, a change is already underway.

Over the years, different states have legalized laws for the protection of gays and lesbians. The GLSEN [Gay Lesbian Student Education Network] is a network that aims in educating the youth about homosexuality. One decade ago there were few groups of GSA’s [Gay Straight Alliances] set up in schools, and the public didn’t really care about the situation. Now there are about 3,000 GSA’s set up in high schools, and homosexuality is a growing concern and issue. It’s great to know so many others feel strongly about this issue and find a need to educate the country.

It’s quite outrageous what some might do to homosexuals just because of who they are. An insurance company no longer was to insure a couple because they were lesbians. Now the couple is pressing charges against the company. Luckily, in many states there are anti-discrimination laws in which gives protection to gays and lesbians. Yet, that still may not stop teens from harassing their homosexual peers, and it is sometimes even worse in some cases if the person is of a different race or religion. If we continue to have groups and individuals who are to stand up for gay and lesbian rights we could help prevent such ignorant actions.

In conclusion, if society is walking the path to social acceptance and tolerance we may have a brighter future and gain more rights for gays and lesbians. Of course, this is a very controversial topic. Some religious groups may disagree strongly with homosexuality because it’s not approved of, but we are not governed by religious laws so we are free to love who we choose, even if they differ from us. To be denied marriage to the one you love and make commitments to because you are in a a non heterosexual relationship does not mean their relationship lack any qualities of a heterosexual couple. I had read in an article that the reason some religions had disapproved of homosexuality because the marriage could not produce offspring. To me, it would not matter what race, gender, or religion the person was because in the end, love is love.

I was on quite a roll, sorry I think it might be longer than a page. sad.gif
