So I was talking to my friend the other day and we started thinking about... what if the Armies of the Qin dynasty in the movie Hero were to face the armies of Saruman and Sauron in the movie Lord of the Rings?

... Let's set up the scenario:
Battlegrounds: Open plain with no covering or elevation difference.
Conflict: The Qin dynasty and Saruman existed at the same time on the same world.

My Debate:
The conditions of this battle would be really different if they were "actually at war". Sauron would most likely use over 1 million troops. Sauron would also have Oliphaunts (the Elephant looking things), and of course, our favorite, trolls! But... if we were to even out the battle field at a limit of 600,000 troops, let's see how it'd go:

We must remember that, the Urakai do not die after being shot with an arrow unless in the head... or at least that's what happened in my LOTR XBox game. So, with that in mind, the 300,000 arrows being fired will most likely have trouble aiming for the head because it is an upward volley into the charging crowd, and not a direct shot into the head. At best, the 300,000 archers, on first wave, will definately kill only about 5-10% of the charging troops of Sauron... Not a great number. However, I do remember that the Qin had those archers that used their feet to fire their arrows... so let's increase the kill count to ~25%, leaving Sauron with ~220,000 troops left after the first wave. My, that's still quite alot of big buff (though many will be wounded) Orcs and Trolls to kill.

By now, Sauron would have most likely have charged at least half the distance between the two armies. The 2nd wave of arrows comes. Another 10-15% dies, still 200,000 orcs and trolls to go. The trolls will most likely not die even if shot numerous times. As I remember, the troll in the mines was shot at least 20 times by Legolas before Legolas finally got smart and decided to shoot him in the head. (Which btw, was quite amusing).

Oh right, we can't forge about the Sauron archers. The Sauron archers will not have as impressive range and power as the Qin archers, but be able to cause some impressive damage on the Qin infanty. As KP pointed out, the Qin infantry is lightly armored and unlike the Orcs, will die (or at least become disabled from battle) if shot in other places (such as shoulder, arm, leg, etc).

I guess what will actually decide the final fate of the battle is the fight between the Qin archers against the remaining of the orc infanty. Of course, the trolls will be alive, and the Oliphaunts will also be alive (as seen in the LOTR movie, they were shot 100+ times and still lived and only were disabled when the people controlling them were disabled). So I guess if the Qin archers can hold off the approaching infantry... then it's a victory.

But in the end, I think Sauron would just bring in another 600,000 troops fresh from the factory... and pwn the Qin.
