The Pocket Muse
Writing exercise #1 Someone left a note on a car windshield. Martha walked out of the education building of the church and was headed towards her car when she noticed someone had left a note on her ’91 peeling red Ford Taurus. She walked faster, curious about what the note said. It was a light green piece of paper, folded in half and stuck underneath her windshield wipers. When she reached the car, she lifted the wiper and unpinned the note. It flew towards a blue dumpster about 20 yards in front of her car. She leapt for the note, almost falling down on the cement of the parking lot. It landed just by the playground fence, and she carefully snuck up on it, reaching down and picked it up, treasuring her note that she hadn’t even read yet. There was a small sense of pride about getting this note. She noticed that no one else in the parking lot had been left one. Martha thought about who the note could be from. Maybe it was Ryan, that guy who every one called Carl for no apparent reason. Martha was the only one who called him Ryan. She walked back to her car and saw Ryan walk out of the building “Hey Ryan!” She called and waved. He looked over at her and waved back “Hey Marianne! My name’s not Ryan!” Her cheeks turned red in embarrassment and she turned around quickly opening the door of her car. She got in and unfolded the note. It wasn’t a note. It was a parking ticket. |
