My mom finally broke down and bought me one. TI-83 plus. She was too cheap to go for the recommended TI-86 or 84 plus

Yeah, I bought one...and I never needed it, or used it though my teacher said I should buy one. That was the worst $100 I ever spent. He was a horrible teacher too. He screwed me up with math and I'll be forever trying to catch up. Grrr

You might need it later on, especially later in high school or college. A calculator seems to be something that is never bad to have around.

I need one for this year and I'm like going to Algebra 1 and 2. I don't really think I need one but our teacher said it's like required. My brother did fine without one, though.

So I'm going to buy a TI-84+ Silver Edition. What's the difference between that and the regular 84+?

it's not bad to have it, but from what I hear, they're not allowed in a lot of tests, or any exams. Also, some universities don't let you use them sometimes

Yes, this is true. Most professors don't allow graphing calculators (or any calculator for that matter) because it is essentially a cheating device. It does work for you.

In my experience, most professors allow you to use a graphic calculator in college courses. In college-level math, a graphing calculator doesn't give you the answer; you still have to know how to solve the problem to even be able to put it into the calculator.

^^Ooh! That's rly mean of them to take that. Smart idea though so they can't take it again. How do I always end up posting in a topic right after you.

No I don't have one but I really want one. The problem is now that we are using a bunch of $ on gas and stuff now.

I have a TI-83+ and it was pretty much a hand-me-down, not that I really need it.

For the most part, all the calculations I do can be accomplished with any regular calculator, but the way how TI-83+ displays its calcuations is just awesome. Also, after I bought the graph link cable, it suddenly became more useful with all the homebrew software available at ticalc.org.
