In almost every school there are people that have more money than you, or another group. I am not trying to brag or anything, but I am not poor, but I cant buy 100 dollar jeans either. I shop at Hollister and people always accuse me of being 'rich' when I cant shop at the store that owns them, Abercrombie. I wish people would stop being so mean to people that have money. Its just that the people I have talked to say that you should spend your money in other ways than buying clothes, and houses and other things. What do you guys think about the 'money and clothes and popularity' differences in high schools today?

money and clothes obviously effect someone's standing in high school. A lot does depend on the types of brand names that you buy. Such brands like abercrombie and typically known as "rich" brands. People always think that others wearing brands like these are snobs, which can be incorrect. I guess that they are just going on a stereotype...

mmhmmm.. some kids forget to be grateful at times about how much money they have and they end up arrogant. it's just how people act these days.

Yeah. I have noticed that a ton people in my grade just take what they have for granted. It is like everyone has the chances and experiences that they just accept. They need to get a dose of what I call "reality".

well, i guess since i go to an international school, we're immediately dubbed as the "snob/rich kid school". i mean, probably everyone can own 100 dollar jeans, but not everyone does. a lot of people do always wear brand names, but other people still wear "cheap" clothing.

that same thing happens to me, i shop at clothes stores like hollister, (lol abercrombie shirts are wayy too small for my cAss. and they are expensive lol 40 bucks for swimming trunks .. no way) its just they think you dress nicely or wear nice things. you can shop from Good Will (which is like a vintage store) and they still look nice alot of my friends here do. popularity also does interfere but .. since im asian they "assume" im rich, when in fact i am spoiled (im an only child).

in school, the "rich" people are the "popular" people. _dry.gif it kinda gets on my nerves. My school is looked at as the all white, rich, snobby prep school where everyone there is stuck up, cocky, and filthy rich. now that is true for about 10% of the students. the other parts, are all different ethnicities, different financial statuses, and other stuff. it does make me mad sometimes. mad.gif

the clothes thing does interfere with your popularity status. i wear a lot of hollister clothes, and some abercrombie clothes. i'm not that rich, my family does not have a lot of money which is why i made a deal with my mom that i get one or two abercrombie things a month and i'll work up to a full wardrobe. _smile.gif but, those who can't afford these things don't like it, and no, i don't like the fact that people judge based on clothes either. my mom does it a lot. she automatically generalizes people that shop at a certain store as "bad kids". i call her out on it, and i hate it but..it happens and you have to deal with it. in every school there's the popular kids and then there's the not-so-popular kids and if you're not-so-popular then..that's that. you still have other not-so-popular friends. being popular isn't everything, and it's not always fun.

my school is looked at like that too, but..we are all mostly white. i don't think there's even one black person in my grade, and there's only a couple in the whole school. we have like 2 or 3 asians total, and some hispanic people. we're very unethicized..

Hollister is Owned by Abercrombie, and i looked on their site and i am pretty sure they dont own Hot Topic...

But umm anyway, i just had a thought. If all the schools wore uniforms, do you think that would break up the whole clothing and money and popularity issue?

hollister, abercrombie, and hot topic are all owned by the same people.

sure it'd get rid of the clothes, but people who do wear abercrombie and hollister do their hair and look a certain way as well, so it wouldn't eliminate popularity based on looks.

actually i just went on their site and it said abercrombie broke away from The Limeted and became independant. Then it has a list of the companies they own, and Hot topic wasnt on there. I still could be wrong though...

Thats true, the hair and makeup would still put people apart. But i think it would make people feel like they dont need to have as much money as the popular people. And wear 'their' style of clothes.

i wear NewYork Lerner....NY brand clothes....lol not all the time though...juss a couple shirts n jeans...im not rich though. I mean it's only cause my mom gets all these 20% off n all...haha
but basically i dont care wut i wear or wut other ppl wear. but for some reason i hav this thing about them having the same shirt/jeans/skirt, etc. and i'd never wear it again..i just like being diff.

we hav none of those problems in our skool though..its basically cuz you're popular by what you do and how you act..how you dress or how much money you hav is juss a plus but if you're snobby or nethin then you arent all that popular

I'm sure you're all about judging others by "what's inside" whistling.gif , but that's no reason to call others "ass[es]". Everyone else, aside from you rolleyes.gif , stereotypes and it is a psychologically normal thing to do.

At first glace at someone who wears an Armani suit, I would think that person is well-off, too. But you know, everyone has his/her own idea of what "rich" is and isnt'.

at our school.. the "popular" kids seem to dislike the rich kids. it's not a REALLY common thing since almost everyone is middle class here, but last year one of the popular kids said he hated me and i was a fag "because i was rich". his opinion was purely based on speculation though, because i always have brand name clothes and he heard i live in a three story house (both of which are true but... it's not like i flaunt it or treat anyone badly because of it). anyways i confronted him with some of our mutual friends and i think it's basically smoothed over. still pisses me off though.

so yes, i do think how you dress and how well off you are effect your popularity standing.

yea... ok well, i used to live in a country club neighborhood before i moved, when we moved there we bought our house for around 400,000. Which was a pretty good price for what we were getting. Then the realestate in our town blew up and we sold our house for 1 million in four years. And everyone always said i was rich, well my parents worked real hard to get us in that house so we would all be happy, and i was. But when i got called rich it made me mad, because it wasnt true. I still couldnt afford 70 dollar jeans. And now since hollister became popular, i wear it like every day, and people always call me 'rich'... well take a look around, have i ever been caught wearing 70 jeans? no, i could if i wanted too, but its just not nessacary when i can get the same stuff for 40 dollars. And now just because i live in a 'all brick' house, how does that make me special and set me apart from everyone else?
