Hero

Once there was a kingdom with a beautiful queen on the throne. She had descended from a long line of great kings and she was no exception. The kingdom was in the midst of a struggle. There were a group of rebels who wanted to overthrow the monarchy. There was one rebel who was worst beyond all the rest. He had killed to many people to count. The town called him Vengeance and he was one to fear above all else.

In the vast kingdom of people there was a young boy by the name of Benjamin. Now Benjamin was your average boy. He had unruly blond hair and blue eyes that sparkled. The thing about Ben was he was all-alone in the world. His parents had died at the hands of Vengeance. His father was a warrior to the queen and his mother was a friend of hers. One dark night there was a raid upon the humble home. Before his parents were killed they hid him away in a cupboard.

Now none thought much of this tiny boy. Even his queen ignored him throughout the whole kingdom. That didn't stop him from trying to be a normal boy. He was weak in body but strong in spirit. There was nothing this boy wouldn't do to the end. It turns out he is not all alone in the world. He has a small dog named Oz who is an orphan too.

The year since his parents' death was going by slowly and he had never set foot into the palace since that day. But one dull morning he found himself walking into the palace entrance. He ignored the disgusted looks of the guards as he made his way to the throne room doors. He paced outside until he was called in. When the voice finally came he walked down the long corridor to a large throne. When he arrived he took a knee in front of the queen and spoke. "When I am old enough I will pledge myself to help and protect you." The queen's watchful eyes look at him with amusement before she gave out a shrill laugh. "You" she told him " Your body is weak boy and you could never protect me. You will never be the man your father was. Now crawl back to whence you came."

Ben had not really expected that answer but he did not let it get him down. He stayed on his knee till she said, "You may go, vermin." Ben rose and he began to walk slowly to the doors. When he had been close he heard a horrendous scream. The sounds of scream and clashing sword echoed in the tiny room. Just then the throne doors slammed open and Vengeance stood in the door way with a crimson sword. Vengeance began to make his way to the queen with his sword. Ben took out a dagger he kept with him and turned to the queen "Run!" he yelled to her and she complied. Ben began to run at Vengeance.

It was some time later when the queen returned to the throne room. When the screaming had subsided she opened the doors. It was much darker than it had been before and something lie in the middle of the floor. As she approached it she saw the blond hair and knew who it was. She ran to Ben and picked him up in her arms. His chest rose and fell so he was still alive. There was a wound near his heart and a crimson dagger lie next to him. She knew Vengeance had not gotten away untouched. She yelled for help but she knew it was in vain. At the yell the boy's eyes fluttered open and there was a sparkle to them. When he spoke his voice was no more than a whisper "I get to see my parents," he told her in a happy voice. She looked down and him "I don't know what you mean. You are not going to die." As she spoke tears began to fall down her face. Ben's blue eyes looked at her and a shadow was passing over them as he spoke in that same whisper "Do not cry for me, my queen, you are safe." Help arrived a second to late. The small boy dies in her arms. She took gentle fingers and closed his eyes.

No one ever forgot the story of the brave Benjamin who sacrificed his life for the queen. The queen herself passed the story down for many generations and the whole town was told so they could tell others. Ben had a funeral fit for a king and a statue was erected of him in the town square. All who looked upon it receive hope and promise that there are still people in the world who care about others. It showed them that even the smallest person could make a big difference.
