looks like someone just extracted that image to me. all the edges are done with just selecting and deleting with a feather px larger than 0

You can do a gradient. It should be the transparent - color gradient. Pick white for your color, then drag the gradient so that the transparent part goes over the picture and the white part goes over the white underneath it.
