I'm sick and tired of people patronizing me through what they wear.
By now, we've all witnessed the LiveStrong epidemic. Such a small, simple article of clothing. What's so great about it? I believe it is the condescending/egotistical statement that really leads to the sale of this thing. Wearing this item has two intended effects:

1) It shows that you have donated to charity.
2) It proceeds to tell others to live strongly, or "LiveStrong" as the band says.

I'm not much of a fashion guru, but I don't think this bright yellow wrist band is a real complementary piece to any wardrobe, at least visually. Instead, the stigma surrounding the band, namely expounding on the fact that you have donated to charity and that you are quite secure with the direction of your life (I AM LIVING STRONGLY!) are the main draw to purchasing this item.

Some people argue, "You sick freak! You hate cancer research! I bought this to help cancer patients, so excuse me!"

First of all, I'm sure you're sense of fashion is only superceded by your generosity. Let's be honest. Most people probably just wanted this thing because everyone else was wearing it. But even if you truly bought it to help cancer research, know this: Your purchase helped cancer, your wearing of the band did not. There are so many ways to donate to cancer, it's amazing that more money hasn't been accumulated over the years. If charity was your chief concern, you could have, and would have donated money in a more subtle way.

Quit boasting. By wearing that thing, you aren't setting a positive impression upon me about life. In fact, it's quite pathetic. Who are you trying to convince?

Actions speak louder than words. Of course trends are cooler.

Please stop live strong.

you have a point with the whole if you loved charity you could have gave the money another way but this way its making teens feel like there doing something for the greater good. and yes these bracelts are a "trend" but trends come and go but the money donated will help treat somebody with cancer or potentially save millions of lives trend or not its a good thing

I bought a pack of 100 in May 2004 with the intention of giving them to people, which I did. I don't think at that time that it was much of a fashion statement, but I've never really given a damn about fashion.

Livestrong doesn't mean sh*t anymore. There was a time when the little yellow bracelets were a symbol of supporting those with cancer, but now people are just hacking the bracelets off their friends that have bought them in 100 packs. I've actually seen kids selling the livestrong bracelets to their little friends and it sickens me. My grandfather died of cancer when I was really young and I hate that people are trying to make a profit out of something that represents such a delicate matter. I've even seen bootlegged versions of the bracelets floating around in local stores. I don't even wear my bracelet anymore, cause it no longer stands for what it used to. I'm happy that it's raised money for treatments and all, but it's stuff like this that bother the hell out of me. I agree that people should just donate money for the sake of donating. Not for a stupid little bracelet.

I have one, but it's clearly to show my contribution toawrds cancer patients. But in the end, all that money goes toward the same cause, even if people buy them for the wrong reasons..

i agree with you. the act of donating to a good cause is turning into a fashion statement. ridiculous. plus, if you haven't noticed, most people at my school (or any others) are buying packs of bracelets and selling them to others. and yes, there are other ways of donating to cancer.

its turning into crap now. now- companies such as nike and stuff like that are making bracelets that look like them... claires is too... god its ridiculous. i bought a few, because my stepmom died of breast cancer. but that was back when they first came out.

I agree that it is turning into a huge fashion statement. It's sad to see people buying these bracelets just to wear them. But truthfully, I don't really mind. All the money that they donate will go to a good cause anyway.

meh, it's stupid if you buy livestrong bands that AREN'T livestrong or tsunami fund bands,etc. etc... like those crap things that don't go to ANY funds, except the store you are purchasing it from. or if you buy a livestrong band for like $15 on ebay.

anndd i don't think you should stop it. because, the money goes to a good cause -- if used appropriately. and just like every fashion trend. it will die.

plus, with how people are these days, do you really think that they are going to get off their lazy arses to go search for a way to help people who are in more need of help then they are? sure, they might.. but there's a higher possiblity that they will help if you stick it in front of their faces.

i agree. i don't have a yellow livestrong one, but i did buy one for the tsunami relief. it's not because it's "cool" or anything... i really wanted to help since it's sorta personal to me [i have relatives in thailand]. i also donated $25 to the school's fundraiser thing

Even though the whole rubber bracelet thing now represents more than just cancer and tsunami relief (such as the cheap ones that are fake and you can buy at a convenience or dollar store), the original cause was a great concept. And obviously it worked. The Lance Armstrong Foundation has raised over triple the amount of their intended goal of $1 million. If it took a fashion trend to do that, so be it.

oh yeah, i just saw that today in CVS...there were these little packages with multicolored and solid colored bracelets with words on them...i think they were called word bracelets or some crap like that

i think it's a horribe trend it's so stupid, you're supposed to donate money because you CARE about cancer research and etc...not because it's cool, what kind of message is this giving out? when the bracelets become uncool, it's like donating will become uncool...

i've donated to plenty of charities but i don't wear a stupid bracelet for all of them
