Here are some of the frequently asked questions that may be useful for boys/men. Please also feel free to add information and ask questions.

puberty...

What is Puberty?
Puberty is an important period of biological changes that children go through as they move toward becoming adults.

When would Puberty start for boys?
Puberty generally begins later in boys, at an average age of 11 1/2 to 12 years. Some boys start puberty earlier, and some boys start puberty late.

What causes puberty to happen in boys?
A hormone called testosterone sends a signal to a boy's body that it's time for puberty to begin.

What are some signs of puberty?
"The first sign of puberty in boys is an increase in size of the testicles. This is followed a few months later by the growth of pubic hair. Puberty continues with an increase in size of the testicles and penis and continued growth of pubic and axillary hair. Boys undergo their peak growth spurt about 2-3 years later than girls. Also, this usually begins with an enlargement of the hands and feet and is later followed by growth in the arms, legs, trunk and chest. Other changes include a deepening of the voice, an increase in muscle mass, the ability to get erections and ejaculate (especially spontaneous nocturnal emissions or 'wet dreams'), and in some boys, breast development (gynecomastia). Development continues and the whole process is completed in 3-4 years, eventually reaching adult testicle and penis size and an adult pattern of pubic hair. This is followed by the development of chest and facial hair."

Why are girls taller than boys? Am I done growing?
Most likely you are not through growing, especially if you have just noticed the first signs of puberty. During puberty, boys and girls go through many growth spurts. In general, girls grow taller at first and then boys follow. And don't worry if you are not growing quickly as girls or your buddies. Each person is different and grows at their own rate.

I noticed that my testicles shrunken down in normal size. Is this normal?
Yes, this is a normal reaction. When they get cold, your testicles will sometimes retract into your body, seeking warmer temperatures. This is only temporary.

One testicle is larger than the other and hangs slightly lower. Should I be concerned?
No. This is normal during puberty as both testicles grow larger. The left testicle generally hangs lower than the right testicle.

Can boys experience emotional changes during puberty?
Yes. Boys and girls experience similar emotional changes during adolescence. Their feelings about themselves and the people around them might change. They might begin to feel more sensitive or temperamental. Boys and girls are often self-conscious about their changing bodies. Boys also experience mood swings during puberty. Like girls, boys need to learn how to control those mood swings.

What are some ways that I can make my body healthy?
Exercise means good health. Make it a life-long habit. Bike, in-line skate, take the dog for a long walk, shoot hoops - whatever, as long as you work that body! A good workout means sweating. Squash body odor with a swipe of anti-perspirant/deodorant under the arms before working out, and shower or bathe with soap afterwards. Exercise requires energy! Keep fueled up with a good diet. Check out this site for information on a diet based on the recommendations found in the food pyramid.

What are some ways to clean my body from hair and acne?
Dealing with hair:
  • It is best to shave after you shower when your pores are open.
  • If you are using a hand razor, lather your face with luke, warm water or shaving cream.
  • Shave in the direction where hair grows and keep clean, sharp razors on hands; these can reduce skin irritations and pimples.
  • You can dab an aftershave lotion or an astringent over your face after shaving to disinfect your face and avoid infections or breakouts.
  • Never use an electric razor in a shower!
Dealing with acne:
  • Start by keeping your face clean. Wash with mild soap and water daily.
  • Try to keep your hands and hair off your face. That just makes your skin oily.
  • Try not to pick at your pimples. That can infect them and may result in scarring.

We've covered just about all the "guy" changes that happen during puberty, from growth spurts to cleaning your body. Let's move on to sex. Since I am going to make this thread, Parental Guidance for thirteen below, talk with your parents and/or educator to help you understand "sex." You can also check some sites to gain information about "sex." For more child-safe information article online, click here.

This post will definitely come in handy for some people.

FYI. . Average penis size is not 6.2 inches. The average penis size is roughly around 5.75 inches and there's pretty much no conclusive evidence to suggest that race has anything to do with penis size.
