Dear Createblog,

As a high school sophomore, I have been constantly discouraged by the apathy of my peers for human rights violations around the world. Whenever I discuss with them the detriments of international human rights deprivation or urge them to join Amnesty International, a human rights relief cause, they respond mockingly, as if the prisoners of conscience in developing nations are not worthy of their attention.

The problem is awareness. Teens today are too absorbed in their comfortable worlds of designer clothes and $300 I-Pod's and do not realize the magnitude of universal human rights. People are being imprisoned for their religious practices and peaceful expressions; women are being forced to abort their unborn babies; children are being pushed into armed conflict and oppressing labor; young girls are trafficked and sold into the sex trade against their will. It is absolutely crucial that this generation realizes that we, as an international community, must unite and take action.

Therefore, on behalf of Amnesty International, I would like to inform you about the organization and urge you to follow our lead in taking international action.

Amnesty International is a worldwide campaign that fights for internationally recognized standards of human rights, as stated in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. These include the essential liberties of society: the freedom to life, verbal expression, and basic education, among many others. Amnesty is independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest or region. We are devoted solely to the prevention and termination of widely spread human rights deprivation, as well as protection of the victims. As an international body with over 1.8 million members in over 150 countries, we, the members of Amnesty, are united in our unflagging concern and effort in combating human rights violations. The solution is not immediate; however, through promoting these values, we are setting examples for the rest of our generation.

So how can you help? We ask for no monetary donations. Our mission is achieved through sending letters of concern and disapproval to various political leaders around the world. In pressuring and urging them to take action against human rights violations, Amnesty International has freed religious prisoners, suffering citizens, and child laborers from the burden of injustice. In taking this personal initiative, you are helping the world to combat human rights violations and promote international justice.

We are asking you to contribute to the cause out of integrity, respect, and genuine sympathy. Too long have we been sheltered both physically and emotionally from the world’s realities. We urge you to look past this world of I-Pods and Saturday night movies, past the grades and SATs, past the comfort of SUV’s and cell phones. While you wish for a new car, others across the world wish for the right to speak. Please realize that these international issues are not simply an Amnesty International thing; this is your world, your generation, and your action. Therefore, once again, we urge you to take the responsibility to display your concern by simply sending a letter or two. You were given the right to express, the skill of literacy, and the gift of communication. Please utilize these benefits for a greater cause. If you have any questions, feel free to direct them to me through email or through posting.

Visit www.amnesty.org for more information for participating in relief missions or starting your own chapter.

With utmost concern and encouragement,
Mindy Zhang

I donate money to Amnesty International annually, I'm a human rights junkie. Thank you for making this topic and increasing 'the awareness level' at createBlog.

&you know what? Maybe this should be in more than one forum. It's an issue that everyone should be exposed to.

Just because this topic is titled 'Dear Createblog' doesn't mean that it's any form of a diary entry.

^ ... This has nothing to do with a diary. Did you even read her post? O_o She's trying to convince members as well as spectators (who lurk this forum) to go out and help the world...

Mindy, you're right. We were blessed with the ability to write, to speak out, and communicate. Maybe even more to that. I think I'll go check out that site too. :] I really like what you wrote. Just thinking about the conditions that other people have to go through in other countries sickens me.

aznxboredxperson, please don't be so quick to judge. You obviously didn't read her post at all. It saddens me that there are people out there who don't even take the minute or two (or maybe a little more) to read something.

Once again, I have been right. (cough) No names to be mentioned, please.

You're right, Mindy. We're all being materialistic here while on the otherside of the world, they wish for a voice. We here try to sheild young people's eyes from images that show what's really happening while on the otherside of the world, people way younger see it happening and are experiencing it first hand. No one's able to see what's happening halfway through the world because it's covered in a clutter of what we see should be our lifestyle. Ack, I'm not making sense. Women here want those expensive purses while on the otherside of the world, women want their freedom.

sad.gif I feel really really bad for myself now. (I'm being arrogant.) Why haven't we seen this problem before?

Wow thanks Mindy for the long speech there!
Hehe... anyways I would love to donate it.
I actually want to donate it really bad, but my parents won't let me.
They think it's a waste ehhhhh.
But anyways I agree on the paragraph 2 part.
Oh no donations? Hm... yeah I'll try to write a letter.
If I can.... or if I can remember to do it next time.

Wonder why half of these young adults doesn't
complain the things/environments that is going
around this earth... maybe they just don't want
to think about it? Well anyways I'll check out the link!

Thanks again, Mindy!

Actually alot of my friends are getting into the movement stuff.. I am too... My boyfriend actually told me the other night that I don't have a voice.... and that made me angry. I do have a voice. We all do. And it's our responsibilty to use it, because there are people that don't have a choice.

(I searched for topics on this, and didn't come up with any results.. but if I'm mistaken, please feel free to close this.)

Is anyone currently part of Amnesty International?

For those who don't know what Amnesty Int. is, it's an organization that helps protect human rights around the world.

I am, and it's a great way to know what's going on around the world and here in the U.S. I've even received letters from Senators and Ambassadors.

I've heard of it and I just went to their website. It looks like a really good organization. I'm thinking of joining. I'd have to research it a bit more though.

The data from the 1999-2000 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey is considered the most definitive assessment of Americans' weight because of the length and size of the study and because people's height and weight are actually measured. The statistics reveal that:

31%, or about 59 million adults older than 20, are obese. Obese is defined as 30 or more pounds over a healthy body weight; overweight is roughly 10 to 30 pounds over a healthy weight.
33% of adult women are obese, compared with 28% of men.
50% of black women are obese compared with 40% of Mexican-American women and 30% of white women. (The survey doesn't have a category for all Hispanics.) There is virtually no difference in obesity among men based on race.
5% of people overall are extremely obese. That's up from about 3% in the early 1990s. But 15% of black women are extremely obese.
About 15% of children ages 6 to 19, or about 9 million children, are overweight.

it's terrible how a great majority of those who are overweight or obese are US citizens while people elsewhere are malnourished. or how children complain how their parents didn't buy them the purse they've "always wanted" or the shirt they've "always wanted"
