OK... this isnt a debate.... its athread about a debate competion, and there fore in my books falls under the debate category, if not move it and advance apologies

I was just wondering if anyone has ever participated in a Model United NAtions competion...

I'm going to the interntional event on friday-sunday, representing chile.... i will be debating in front of abotu a athousand fellow representatives. here is my resolution... does it seem air tight enough?

please give a decent critque, its only a first draft and can be changed. and would you sign it

Question of: Conditions in Prisons

Deeply conscious of the rapidly growing world prison population, with over 8.75 million people currently held as pre-detainees or having already been convicted and sentenced world-wide.

Noting with concern the less than satisfactory conditions which some of these prisoners endure, for instance prisoner abuse in member states such as Haiti, or the spread of disease in states such as Russia, where it is thought that 10% of the prison population is infected with tuberculosis.

Fully alarmed by some governments’ flagrant disregard for The Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners (First adopted in 1955).

Convinced that more must be done to ensure that a greater number of member states move towards bringing conditions in their prisons up to UN standards.


1) Emphasizes the need for the separation of certain groups, for instance men from women and juveniles from adult prisoners, with the aim of reducing sexual and physical abuse.

2) Further recommends the education of prison staff in the beliefs of major religious/ethnic groups in order to increase awareness of what is likely to cause offence to inmates.

3) Deplores the holding of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay with out trial, and urges member states to reduce pre-trial imprisonment to the minimum possible time period.

4) Acknowledges that countries such as Chile have been in difficult periods of government transition in recent years, and that as such prison conditions have been of little concern, but calls upon the fledgling governments to look upon the issue with renewed concern.

5) Reaffirms need for greater adherence to existing UN laws.

6) Calls for tougher action against states which breech existing UN guidelines.

7) Expresses hope for further support in improving global prison conditions in all member states, especially those with high prison populations.

No, i didnt know there were actual competitions, but it is an elective class at my school that i want to sign up for. It sounds interesting, i like debating.

it looks good; you have some really great ideas, and it's worded very nicely. however, you might want to include a clause about funding, which gets people every single time. also, you're sure to be criticized for clause 6-- a lot of nations would view that as infringing upon their national sovereignty. you also might want to include some specifics because generally, the more detailed and comprehensive resolutions get passed. (yes, sadly, a lot of people our age get the impression that quantity ensures quantity.)

no, funding has been eliminated tfrom this particular conference for some reason *shrugs* all countries are considered equal in terms of amount of money able... dnno why, but there you go.

i was worried about 6 tho, but there are a lot of countries who have signed the treaty i mentioned and then proceeded to ignore it totally... which irks me

oh wow, the funding thing... that's really clever of them! all the conferences i've been to have been so tedious because of all the funding controversy.

meh, i'm kind of attending this next conference just for the experience.. they only award one delegation per committee for some reason, and this guy in my committee has a two-year gavel streak. haha, and there's a guy that's attempting to break his streak. so i have the best and the challenger of the best.. greeeattt..

and wow, an international conference! i'd like to go to one of those, but my school is restricted to the U.S.

anyway, good job resolution it is very nicley worded as someone said before.BUT

when you give a point or an idea you should have a sub clause to support your idea with a solution. for example with number six you said "6) Calls for tougher action against states which breech existing UN guidelines." tougher action is quite a vague term. possibly give a sub clause to this with what kind of "tougher action" could take place.

Wow, I really wanted to join this year, but I never got the chance! A lot of my friends are in it, and they go to competitions all the time..and it's real good for your education because you get to learn about what's going on in many countries.

actually, i found out today that george mason doesn't allow pre-written ones, even though they DISTINCTLY said that they did in their resolution-writing guide. the chair said that they made a mistake in the packet. blahh

actually, i think that some organizations under the UN can be helpful, in terms of humanitarian aid.
