I know next to nothing about computers. I can turn one on and run almost every program blind folded. I'm an expert at making websites, graphics and such but when it comes to the guts of the computer I know jack. My dad had a computer built for me. This is whats in it. Can anyone tell me what each part is and if its quality or crap.

BIOStar M7Vig 400 motherboard
2.2 gig Athon Chip
Oversize temp. control chip fan
80 gig harddrive
52x32x52x CDRW
40x CD
3 1/2 floppyDrive
128 meg. PC 2700 RAM Chip
256 meg. PC 2700 RAM Chip
500 Watt CPU case

It also has Win. Xp. Pro.

This is word for word what the builder says is in it. What should I do with it?

BIOStar M7Vig 400 motherboard <Not sure if it's good or not.
2.2 gig Athon Chip <If it's a Athlon 64 chip, good, if it's an Athlon XP chip, it's okay.
Oversize temp. control chip fan <Good to have.
80 gig harddrive <Enough.
52x32x52x CDRW <Good.. if all you want to do is burn music
40x CD <I guess that's good to have also.
3 1/2 floppyDrive <Good, but no one really uses floppies anymore.
128 meg. PC 2700 RAM Chip
256 meg. PC 2700 RAM Chip <Good speed. Enough memory for what most people do.
500 Watt CPU case <More than needed, but good.

It also has Win. Xp. Pro. <That's great.

Considering those parts are meant to run with windows (most likely,) Windows XP Pro is the best choice IMHO. And I know that OS X could blow Windows away.

And since when does great mean best? laugh.gif

You'd want to put more memory in. Above I said it was okay, I thought it was 768mb.

not necessarily crappy. it depends what form factor your case is and what your needs are. space is something you need to save, especially if you're in a college dorm. A huge full-tower ATX case might not be the way to go (even if it can fit 6 3.5" drives), so you'd probably want a mATX or even a mini-itx case.
