i kinda feel stupid but people keep tellin me different meanings for emo and what their tellin me are all different.. any one know the real meaning?

emo means they put a lot of heart into the lyrics
like so much you have to do research to figure out the lyrics. i'm not to fond of it. but lots of people are. |

...those are kind of right, but in the sense of a genre (which i'm assuming is the definition you want?) emo was a movement in the d.c. punk scene where some of the bands started to write more heartfelt lyrics, and got a little less hardcore. that was in the late 80s. the genre has of course had gone through many different stages since then, and nowadays people consider bands that have heartfelt and often whiny lyrics emo (an acoustic guitar usually helps). there's a great website with the whole history of the genre, it's here. hope that cleared it up for you.
