Always good to have better technique in breathing.  Our first chair flute player doesn't breathe very well, I can tell.

How did she get first chair...?

He* tongue.gif got first chair mostly because he had great technique, and the best sight reader in the section.

our piccolo player (only need one for concert season) is a guy

of course, he also plays tuba in the higher class, which he switched to because we needed more tubas and for marching the piccolos wanted him out because then they couldnt make pink shirts and do girly stuff

they have a lot of gift exchanges (and people actually carry through buy each other stuff, unlike my section) and their piccolo shirts this year were pink baby tees. last year they were bright green, but i dont know who was tasteless enough to pick that

Haha, awesome.

And what does piano have to do with band? Eh?

You guys, something bad did happen at the trip. Turns out the choice is bigger than expected...and the consequences would be suffered.

On the VERY last 45 minutes of our trip (before we go back to Vegas), a senior was caught smoking...right in the middle of the beach and the buses. First of all, I cannot imagine anyone dumber than that. Smoking is stupid to start with, not to mention you can't even stop smoking for FORTY-EIGHT HOURS? Then he told on another guy that was a junior, who had to take out his belongings and show his pack of cigarettes.

That was what I knew after the beach session was almost over and we had to head back to the bus.

Then I found out today, after the long conversation from our BD...that they were even smoking in their room at the hotel. The first thing they did after they got their keys and to the room (before bed check, which was 45 minutes) WAS SMOKE. When I heard it, I didn't know what to think. It was one of the two groups that had smoking room...all the other rooms were non-smoking. It JUST SO happens they got a smoking room, and our BD trusted them. He even smelled the smoke, but he trusted them.

Now he has to make a choice. He said all four years, that if he catches anyone smoking, drinking alcohol, sex, past curfew, then he will not have the band travel; if the consequences are the WORST, then the band will not travel for four years until the WHOLE band is wiped out. Hopefully, that's not the case...because that will not only ruin the juniors (who are really pissed, by the way) but the whole band. He can't let us travel...because that would be he's been lying for the past four years. But it's two (or three...actually) people's wrongdoings that could change the band.

The orchestra that came with us is following our BD's decision. If we don't travel, they don't travel. It's funny how the whole trip, we were complaining about the immaturity of orchestra, when now, they seem more like a group than us. They were not the ones that had two (or three) people smoke. But what we do will determine what orchestra does. They chose to follow his decision...and the orchestra director encourages that we continue to travel next year. Supposedly, it was only "one person" or "a few people" that did the wrong thing.

One thing that stood out (I really love our BD in his words and knowledge) was when he said that everything comes out from only a few people. The reason why we can't chew gum is because a few people choose to stick it under desks. All punishment and enforcements are cause by "one person" or "a few people." He was kind of laughing when he said that...in his words, of course.

I believe there were people that saw them smoking. I believe the guy that got caught is not the only to blame. He did get his punishment though...in a way. But he deserves more punishment, in my opinion. It's such a SELFISH thing to do. I really hate smoking (my mom smokes) and to top it off, it might be the reason we don't travel.

We have a drill COMMISSIONED BY US...and what we might get to do...is perform it within the town of Las Vegas. That's really, really sad. It's such a sad thought...that it makes me want to squeeze his neck to pulp. But I know it's not entirely his fault.

Society tends to blame it on people, and forget everyone's wrongdoings.

Personally, I don't think I did anything to deserve this, nor did the JUNIORS, especially. I feel really bad for them...their last year is ruined.

No more Seattle/Vancouver, New York, Chicago...seriously.

The whole trip was awesome...really, until the last day. People didn't wake up, they didn't clean up early...some of them were so late that we were stalled about 30 minutes to an hour. Then after the ride to the beach, our BD sees one of our seniors smoke. He had to talk to his daughter about smoking and for once, one of his band students is actually something she SHOULD NOT follow.

He told us how there was a lot of irony in this. He said we were his favorite band in his whole career, yet it was the only time he had to have this talk. He wishes to never have this conversation again, and I hope so.

UH, geez, it's horrible. We were trying to prove to the dean what kind of a band we are...for the past two days, and on the last day, she has to RPC two students. It was our BD's first time to RPC any student.

Geez...I don't know whether to laugh or yell in anger for this.

Sorry this is so long.

ohmygosh thats soooo awful!!aww, im so sorry. no one in my band did anything stupid, thank goodness. if they did, we wouldnt all be punished though. assumedly either they would be kicked out and/or sent home, depending on the event. most peoples rooms were smoking rooms for us too, actually, but no one did. thats so bad for the orchestra too! awww fallen.gif

Oh wow, thts so sad. cry.gif

On our Hawaii band trip, we had many accidents. A guy was depressed because there ws this girl he liked and the girl that he liked became a girlfriend to someone else. This made him all depressed, and from that, I think he overdosed on some medication. Not to mention with all those times he fell down and hit himself on the head, and with the overdose, it was scary. He went to the hospital because of that. mellow.gif
I mean, I would feel sad, but I would'nt do something that stupid. Gosh, he is trying to be the Drum Major next year too. I don't feel too dependent on him... mellow.gif

Yeah, he punishes the whole band, because first of all, it wouldn't be only him enitirely at fault, and second of all, it would set an example that if they ever do something wrong, the whole band would suffer the consequences. Peer pressure. What was awful was the there were only two smoking rooms, and the people that smoked happened to get a smoking room...2 out of so many rooms. And my BD once told the orchestra director (before the smoking happened) that what we do shouldn't affect what they do. If someone in orchestra scews up, we will continue traveling, but at this situation, our BD says that we shouldn't pull them down with us. But they chose to follow whatever we do...I really appreciate that, but geez, it makes the decision a lot harder.

Wow...I wouldn't trust him either. I don't think he'd be a good candidate to the band director either, so I don't think you have to worry?

Yay...finally, someone posted.

I'm going to try for section leader. Well...I don't really have anymore to say to that, except I hope I can be section leader..haha.

Well, one of our drum majors had to move, and one's a senior, leaving only a junior. I guess that means a lot of people are trying for drum major, so many that I don't even know.

Some of the people that want to try for drum major are kind of terrifying though. As in they don't seem like the type to be a good drum major. I don't know...
