Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. ;]
Swearing are just words, its what you think of that word that actually makes it well..meaningful.

I cuss but there are 2 cuss words that I will NEVER use (n****r and c**t). And when I'm around anyone younger than 12 or people that don't like cussing then I keep my mouth clean.

QUOTE(lilteardrop @ Jan 4 2005, 3:34 PM)
its self expression. it reflects who you are. if you want to be known as someone who swears alot so be it.
but i dont think its a good thing.

*

it doesnt really reflect who you are because only you know who you are , others just have a perception of who they think you are.

I swear to express my feelings if im mad ill curse , If im happy ill curse but it doesnt mean that I curse 24/7.

I think that you should curse at the right time. If you curse all the time to "express your feelings", no one will care about your feelings anymore because they take it for granted that you just love to swear. If you don't usually curse and when you DO curse, it will mean much more.

well, i think that the bible says that it is a sin, but i don't swear that much anyway. but if people around you don't like it, don't do it. simple as that.

Swearing can't just be described as right or wrong; it's not a black&white issure. There are shades of grey. If someone asks you to stop, it's not whether it's right or wrong that stops you; it's just respect and courtesy.

It's neither right nor wrong.

^^ What she said.

You can't really call it "right" or "wrong." Personally, I swear fairly often. Not constantly, but I definitely don't have days where I don't curse. I just like it. But I keep it where it's appropriate. For whatever reason, man invented these words and then deemed them socially inapporiate at certain times. So I don't curse in front of children (on purpose anyway... lol) and I don't curse when I talk to my bosses or to professionals or anything like that. Mostly just when I'm talking to my family and friends. But I try not to do it too often because I think that at a certain point, it starts to sound classless.

I really don't see how swearing is wrong, unless you use it as an insult. But can't you offend someone with regular words? I don't see why parents try to make their kids not learn cuss words—I mean they will learn soon or later. As long as you don't cuss at someone to offend them in any way, then I don't see how it's wrong at all.

QUOTE(stephinika @ Dec 28 2004, 11:12 PM)
personally i don't care. i'm just wondering how some words just qualify as 'swear words'. who decided that to say the word fcuk is bad? lol just wondering.
*

I don't know, but I know how the word was invented!

A long time ago in England, whenever a married couple wanted to have children, they needed permission from the king. So off they went to one of the king's representatives, and if deemed worthy of having children, they went back home and er, reproduced. While doing so, they had to abandon their jobs (most likely farming and tending to the fields) and had to put up a sign with the letters F U C K on them, which stood for "Fornication under consent of the King."

And there's your little history/legend lesson.

Anyway, swearing is fine to me. While most people think of this as a moral issue, I think this is more of a personality and self image issue. We all use different vocabulary and diction because we may be from different areas, interact with different groups of people, etc. It depends on who you're talking to, and what you're talking about. Swearing, I think, is acceptable if you take note of what kind of person it is you're talking to.

QUOTE(eggnite @ Dec 28 2004, 11:53 PM)
Is swearing right or wrong? Or is there a more complex answer?

My answer would be that if swearing offends somebody around you, dont do it. But if your with people who dont mind swear words anymore than words like shucks, or darn, than its okay. Because whe you get down to it, swear words have the same effect as saying ouch when you get hurt. They are just a way of expressing your feelings more effectively than regular words can.

buut, i dont mind people swearing, as long as it's not an insult.

But my point is.. is that it's wrong for all ages.

No its not wrong. (That is what i believe). I think that people younger like in grade school, kindergarten-5th grade, is wrong to swear. Though when they grow up, It just turns into a basic word for them. It's just a word, but if they learn it young, who knows what they will do next. Steal?. That's just my opinion

i admit it.
i'm a pottymouth.
and a catholic.
but i think swearing IS a sin, however i can't seem to stop sometimes because it becomes just part of your language and doesn't really have any meaning anymore, but i'm not saying that i cuss ALL the time, but people have to know when it's appropriate(with friends, in frustration, etc..) and inappropriate(in front of older people).

yeah, i completely agree.
now, it's just a way to show how "cool" u are. everyone's swearing in school.. i think that the meaning is long lost. but still, come to think of it, swearing is just a bunch of words tied together labeled "bad". it doesnt really mean anything bad, overtime, people just created meanings for it.

hmm. in my opinion it's not necessary. it offends some people so i suppose there are some other words people can use to substitute. some people don't care what others think though. but yeah, i basically agree with lilteardrop.

As of late, I have noticed that, when people use it, it sounds rather stupid. Well, at least I think so. It is like that one kid in your class who is using such clichéd words, it sounds just retarded to hear.

Cussing (swearing) seems to go on more than just some 'cool term' that has been used too much. Like 'your mom' jokes. Those just need to rot away.

So, I rarely cuss, because when I do, I think I sound stupid. And it bothers me at times. So.. ehh. I don't mind that people cuss, it just.. sounds funny.
