Re-write of Romeo and Juliet, act 2, scene 2...I think Options

I was just going through some old stuff and I found this. I did it for English. I had to pick a scene in Romeo and Juliet and re-write it into modern day language. I took it a step further by changing the scene up a bit and playing around the characters. Enjoy =) [I hope you somewhat know the plot of the story, because I forget the details of the story at this point]



In this newer version of Romeo and Juliet, things are a little different. Romeo is no longer a sought after guy, but what would be considered a ‘freak,’ because he dresses in black a lot, and wears eyeliner. Rosaline, is exactly like Romeo, but she is still choosing not to love. Capulet is now the owner of a major cap gun company, and is also suffering with bad health and expects to die within 10 years. Paris has become the new and eager employee, rising high into new positions, meanwhile the only reason he was hired is because he is Capulet’s best friend’s son. On the outside, Juliet is not like Romeo, just inside her mind she is, sharing the same interests as him, unfortunately, the new Juliet is not met in this scene. Juliet is a student at an alternative college, studying film and business, because she will one day have to run her fathers company. Also, not only is Benvolio Romeo’s best friend, but also his band mate.

[Capulet and Paris in the back of a car]

Capulet- But Montague must also control himself, as I must too.
When the penalty is the same for both of us, I think it’s not hard to follow.
We are old and there is not much to fight about these days.

Paris- How honorable you both are acting;
It’s a shame to live with such a grudge for so long.
And now sir, what do you say to my offer?

Capulet- [sigh] I’ve told you over and over,
she does not know the world.
And even though you two have known each other since you were children,
I do not even think she knows just how you feel about her.
She hasn’t seen even 20 years, let her finish college,
and then she will be ready for marriage.

Paris- There are girls younger than her who are mothers.

Capulet- Paris, you must understand,
she is my only child,
and the only one I will entrust the company with.
She needs to finish her education.
But Paris, attract her, let her love you.
I will only give you my blessing if she loves you.
I’m having a party tonight, Paris. I have invited everyone that I could think of, and more. There are going to be a lot of girls there.
Come, see, and maybe meet someone new, someone who you think is prettier than my Juliet.
[To the chauffer]
Here, take these to their appropriate houses
[Exit Capulet and Paris, enter Benvolio and Romeo]


Benvolio- C’mon man, snap out of it.
She only does it to make you miserable.
Overcome her by becoming joyous again.

Romeo- Your healing words are not helping.

Benvolio- Romeo, why are you mad?

Romeo- Not really mad, but it’s not easy to just get over someone.
I’m still attached to her. I’m crazy for her.
Crazier than a person in the loony bin.
And she’s kept me in my own prison, held within my mind.
I’m in a rubber room, with a straight jacket on, kept without food. I’m scarring deep on the inside. [lifts up sleeve, shows cuts]
This is what her non-loving heart has caused me to do. [Car pulls up, window rolls down, Romeo puts down his sleeve]
Good evening sir.

Chauffer- Good evening. I was hoping if you could direct me to the house of Rosaline and Livia Capulet.

Romeo- Rosaline, yes, yes I know where her house is. [Leans next to the window and tells the driver the directions]

Chauffer- Ah, thank you. There is a big party at my employer’s house. He is inviting the whole town, stop by, have a drink, have some fun!

Benvolio- And who is it that you work for?

Chauffer- Mr. Capulet, of Capulet Cap Guns.

Benvolio- [Nods] I see.
We will definitely make sure we stop by. [Car pulls away]
Romeo, we are going.

Romeo- For what reason?

Benvolio- To get your mind off of Rosaline.
There are going to be many girls at the party tonight.
We shall go, and you will see, that Rosaline is only a daisy compared to the other roses around here.

Romeo- Someone more beautiful than Rosaline? I think not!

Benvolio- You saw her when there was no one else around.
Compare her to the other girls.

Romeo- [sigh] Okay, I will go along,
but I will not find anyone more beautiful than my love.
