the topic was to write about how Pip changed in the story and how. who helped him? From the book Great Expectations When Charles Dickens started writing Great Expectations in 1860, he created astonishing characters that go through a great deal of change. One of the main characters in the novel named Pip, experiences this process of transformation with the help of a young girl named Estella, whom he falls in love with. As the years of Pip’s life longing to become a gentlemen pass by, his innocence slowly disappears and is replaced by self-awareness with the helping hand of Estella’s twisted wit, radiant beauty, and her love that she might have for him. Estella is “admired by all who see her” (pg.117). As she grows older, she becomes “so much more beautiful, so much more womanly” that Pip is hopelessly in love. When she allows him to kiss her cheek, he felt as if he should have gone through a “great deal” (pg.92) just to be able to do so. He feels as if Estella gave him the greatest thing in the world, but yet it was nothing to her. Pip decides to become a gentleman, to please her so she would not think it was nothing if he was to kiss her again. Her mind, corrupted by Miss Havishham’s hatred for the male sex, plays with Pip’s emotion. Throughout the beginning of the book, she calls him “boy” (p.56) and always looked down upon Pip. She insults Pop calling him names such as “common laboring boy” (pg.59) and abuses him when she “slapped his face with such force” (pg. 82). She is given “quick delight” (p.62) that she is able to play with his feelings and is also able to break them into a million pieces. Pip’s emotions grows stronger for he knows that the only way that he can go through with all that she does, he must be stronger. All the way through the novel, Estella has mixed feelings for the one she ‘loves’. She marries Drummle but does not love him. She warns Pip not to fall in love with her, because all she can do is break his heart. She feels to Pip that they will “never understand each other” (pg.367), but Pip does not feel this way. He believes that she is “part of his existence” (pg.368) and he will always be in love with her. She does not have time to say what she thinks, for he leaves out in rage. Pip stays true to his word, as still loves her and only her. He is more aware now, that he went through so much for this girl, and he will not stop there. At the ending of the book, they are brought together one last time. She had lost her beauty, but is still left with her wit and charm. She expresses that she “thought of him often” (pg. 492) and she has given him “a place in her heart.” (pg.492) At that point, all of Pip’s innocence is gone, for he knows the meaning of love and has received it.
