well, i am just wondering, but would you rather
1) Give a present to a person and he/she didn't give you anything back and make them feel bad and if you are in this situation would you buy them a present next year? or 2) Get present from a person and you don't have anything to give them back and now you feel bad.... but hey, you got a present! be honest, no one is judging you here
