This past year, my family took a vacation to Aspen, Colorado. As we were standing on top of a mountain, taking in the absolutely breathtaking scenery, my dad made a comment.

"You know, I feel so much closer to God here than at the temple."

I couldn't help but agree with this statement.

I'm sorry for starting another religion thread, but I don't think I saw a topic like this. What do you feel? Do you feel more spiritual reading out of a prayer book at a church or temple, or just being surrounded by nature?

Personally, I feel closest to God when I'm holding him in my hands at Communion.

I feel more closer to God after reading the bible or watching religious movies. I have no idea why, but that's just me.

I wholly agree with your father's statement. God created nature. Mankind created religion. If I want to worship mankind, I'll go to church. When I want to talk to God, I'll meet him in a country meadow, by a babbling brook or in the flight of a bird.

You found the biggest problem with a large number of the religious in this country. People go to church to get a "high," if you will. Some people will switch religions for silly reasons like not feeling entertained at mass or a service.

Church is where we go to worship God. I have a feeling that if people understood why the celebration of the Eucharist is so important, more people would be Catholic. That is why we follow His rules. We shouldn't make our own rules to make ourselves happy.

Good point...

The truth behind my original statement was created by the three years I spent living with the Havasupai in the Grand Canyon. If you are able to have a relationship with the Creator through the church, that's fantastic.

I think more people are with Nature
to see the breath taking scenes that God has created.
I remember going to the mountains
and we go there every year
but no matter what my friends dad would always say the same thing.

I kinda believe in both. I feel closest to God when I see what he has created but I also feel close to him when I read his word and learn about him. biggrin.gif However, I would say I'm probably feeling more closest then anything when I pray because prayer is speaking to God.
