There are a lot of reasons, but there are some key ones held by those against the G8. Most are anti-globalists (media's term, not mine), which means they oppose globalization, of course. One of the biggest reasons is due to fair trade. Fair trade is a movement that supports labor/environmental standards and economic justice for workers in Third World countries. (Basically, fair trade activists say that those Chinese workers that make seventy-five cents a day should get a fair working wage for their labor.) They believe that globalization will result in unrestricted fair trade that will allow the rich nations of the world to grow richer off the hard labor of the poor nations, while the poor nations continue to get even poorer.

Some see globalization as strengthening corporations, building massive multinational corporate entities that have so much capital that they can influence entire governments. (Hm...sounds familiar, huh?) As an extension, some see globalization as inevitably resulting in continued and unrestricted corporate rape of the environment, and corporate rape of people, in the name of profits and the search for another dollar.

Others see globalization as modern imperialism; for example, American nations expand into foreign nations, and those nations welcome the companies and their income, doing everything they can do accomodate them, and in effect become American colonies, since they act in accord with US government and corporate policies. Along the same lines, some anti-globalists also see globalization as an attack on their nation's sovereignty.

Credit is also an issue. Globalization, some say, results in an emphasis on credit, which results in soaring debt and debt crisis. (Hm...sounds familiar, huh?) This also results in a lot of money flowing into America, instead of developing nations that need that money to improve their infrastructure and standard of living.

In a nutshell, that is what causes a lot of opposition to the G8.

It stands for "Group of 8", and is a collection of the eight richest, most industrialized nations in the world: France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, the US, Canada, and Russia.

Well, they pretty much just talk, and talk, and talk some more. They mostly discuss economic issues, but they've also discussed the environment (the Kyoto anti-global warming treaty is a common issue), prevention of pedophilia and human trafficking, and terrorism prevention.

medic- your signature is scary. :[

edit:
should the debate forum be renamed the "current events forum?"
but then again, all of those "god" topics would be left homeless.

My understanding is that the "hatred" people have toward the G8 is that they represent liberal capitalism. For developing 3rd world countries, they are unable to have an equal voice in international policy because they lack the influence $ brings. Although this is a simplistic perspective, it begins to explain why so many countries dislike U.S. policies.

Many Americans, including teachers, would support it because of the general notion that the U.S. represents the "correct" view of world policy. (Like a self-serving interest does.)

McDonald's in Africa and China illustrates my point.

Many fundamentalists get mad (middle east conflict) because their views get run over. This is not a justification of terrorism, just a simple view on why people don't like what the G8 stands for.

Well, I turn on my TV a few months ago, and I see mobs in the streets angry at the US's unilateral policy in the invasion of Iraq. Then I turned on my TV a few days ago and I see mobs of people angry at the G8 and the US. So what do these people want exactly?

I just don't see how the G8 and the US constitute "playing nice" necessarily. There are far more countries outside the G8 than in. I'm not seeing how you are logically linking the world's reaction to Iraq and the world's feelings towards the G8. It's not as though the same groups who are protesting the war in Iraq are also protesting the G8 summit. They're two entirely separate issues.
