i hate stereotyping and i think that if we all just took the time to get to know people for who they really are then this world would be a much better and far easier place to live in.

Haha I totally agree.
People think just because I'm an Fob Japanese that: I'm good at math, I play the piano and violin, my parents own a resturant, and I've never recieved a grade lower then a A-.

i believe that stereotyping will always be around. why? because well im not quite sure but maybe because its been around for so long And sure we all stereotype against ourselves. But sometimes like with myself i find myself to be stereotypical without realy realizing it. But i hate stereotyping like most ppl have said but its always gonna be around. i mean jus think about it, like with comedians they use stereotypical jokes all the time and thats what makes people laugh. Stereotyping is becoming something very natural i guess...not tht its a good thing.

Sure, it's when people get all fanatic and overreact about stereotypes that there becomes a problem.

Stereotyping will always happen because of the way we look at society. I mean, if we constantly see "black man" as the suspect of crimes, then it will be stored in our minds and memories that black men are all evil and like to commit crimes. This is definitely not true, and we know it, but in a way, some of us probably still think it in the back of our minds.
Although I disagree with some stereotyping, I think it can often be helpful because most people don't try to break their stereotype. For example, when someone is trying to hire someone to work at a huge business that deals with clients and customers all the time, do you think they're going to hire the pierced, tattooed punk or the clean-cut, glasses wearing guy? They probably judge / stereotype the two and choose the clean-cut one because his APPEARANCE is better. Although the punk might have much better skills in everything than the other guy, first appearances and stereotypes often play into factor in many aspects of our lives.
The thing about stereotypes is that they are most often true. I am sorry to say this, but not many black people have impressed me. I have been treated so rudely by many, many them. I have a few black friends that are wonderful and break the stereotype (I place on them), but otherwise, I am appalled by their behavior towards complete strangers. Not to sound dramatic, but I am 'scarred for life.' It is not my problem that they complain about the stereotype people put on them but do nothing to change it. I even heard that the Katrina refugees we accepted and helped were lazy and did nothing but increase our crime rates in where I live. Stereotyping may be harsh, but it has to be derived from some amount of truth, no matter how small it is.

*Note~ please do not think I hate black people. I try not to judge anyone until they actually interact with me. Once again, it is just a stereotype.

It took a lot of balls to say what you just said (especially in this community). I agree with you, and I totally understand.

I hate it when people stereotype others, and especially themselves. I do it sometimes, too, but i at least try to stop.

I've always had these thoughts of starting an organization to stop stereotyping, haha.

I think first of all I must say that even though stereotyping is obviously wrong and annoying at times...there is no way of stopping it. Thats like trying to completely change the entire worlds way of living so that you can prevent global warming. Its NOT going to stop 100%.

Another thing is, it all depends on what type of stereotyping we are talking about. In my opinion there are two kinds. There is classifying people and making a generalization about them on things that they can not change...for instance, race, gender, height, so on and so forth. The other kind is making a generalization about something that is a known decision...like emo, or goth, or "gangsta".

I am strongly, strongly against people who judge other people about their race or gender and things like that. However, I think people have every right to generalize a group of people that CHOOSE to be the way they are. If you are wearing clothes that looks like you just came out of prison and a bandana the color of a popular gang...I'm gonna assume you are dangerous. If you are wearing all black and refuse to smile...I'm going to assume you are gothic. If you are a boy with long black hair sweeped across your face and you are wearing jeans tighter than the ones I wear...you are EMO...

bla bla bla.

See what I mean?

Thats my point. I just find it annoying. Its like judging someone because of thier individuality, group, race etc. Im black and i don't like it when people say that all black people are theifs and dangerous. Not all of them are like that. Its just prejudice mad.gif

i try not to judge people. but some people basically justset themselves up to be steriotyped in certain situations. i mean, i don't judge african americans. i don't steriotype them into the dangerous group. unless, that is, they are acting so. what i'm trying to say is in no way prejudice. it could be any race of person, but as you mention african american's are often judged into this label. if someone is walking down the street acting all tough, you're bound to think they're trouble. it's human nature.

People always stereotype me for being Asian. People assume right off the back of there heads that I'm an "A" honor student but the fact of the matter is I'm not even an honor student. And what really pisses me off is when people ask half-ass questions about my cultures food.

I get sad when I think about stereotyping. Like people have said before me, I think everyone does it, because it's just natural for people to do. I try not to judge people untill I talk to them, but you only get one chance to make a first impression on someone.

Generally, people begin judging without realizing it when they first see someone new.

I've been stereotyped MANY times because of the activities I'm involved in. IE: Marching Band
you don't know HOW many times I hear "One time.....at band camp...." when they find out I'm in marching band. I'm like "GOD! you'd think I haven't heard that a million times!" A lot of people think I'm some sort of nerd/freak because I'm in band.

It happens to the best of us...we just need to ignore it and try not to stereotype. It's hard, but it's not impossible.

The point is that some stereotype more than others, and I mean alot more. I don't think everyone stereotypes because I don't. I do admit though I used to but not intentionally.
