wireless internet? Options

heyyz iuno where to put this so i guess it would go here under comp stuff...anyway i hav comcast cable at home and about a year ago i bought a router so it works on 2 desktops, now i just got a computer in my room and i was wondering how to get internet up there without having millionsof wires...i heard that u can use a wireless router but i read into it and got REALLY confused cause it was talking about like...well really confusing stuff so any help would be appreciated ^_^

yes you can. most wireless routers have slots for ethernet cables too.

However, their are hackers out their driving in their car with a laptop trying to get free internet by using "certain methods". I've heard and seen this been done. It only suggested to use a wireless connection if you don't live in the city (like in the suburbs or something). If you do live in the city like Manhattan for example, you shouldn't use it because their no way to protect your connection in the air.

right. you need to be careful with wireless networks, people can war drive your connection and gain access to your LAN. I think you can protect it though, that's how airports and hotels force you to pay to get on their wireless lan.

That's generally what people do, get a wireless router. Actual wireless internet through like cellphone towers and stuff currently just isn't up to par with landlines, they're really slow, and it's expensive. Basically the wireless internet you see at Starbucks and people's houses are all Wi-Fi, either 802.11a/b/or g. Which means it's just a wireless router connected to a broadband modem to provide the surrounding area with internet. But of course if you did get a wireless router, you'd need a wireless card in your comp.

Define Wireless, Wireless as in WiFi or wireless as in using Cellular towers to broadcast it.

eh, we didnt get that specific. but even if you have like satalites, dont you still need some sort of singal that might be interupted by say a hurricane that cut off the phone lines?

If you're talking satilite wireless internet then that has nothing to do with phonelines outside of your house. But that is freakin expensive and can cost upwards of $100 a month for way slower speeds than DSL or Cable, those are mostly good for companies like sears where their repair guys have vans and go out to repair stuff. Like this one repair guy came to our house and was accessing the web from his laptop via WiFi to his van which had satilite internet. Useful for them, for the home user, not useful. No-a-days, if you have certain types of cellphones, you can surf the web, we're talking actual web, not WAP and hook it up to your laptop through a special cable and get internet. This pretty much maxes out at like 50Kbs though so it's still slow, but the technology is improving.
