Omfg, this is good.
An olllld recipe of mine, harr. ;] Yeah. It's Irish! There's history behind it, but I'm sure you don't want a history lesson in t3h cooking forum, now do you? Irish Soda Bread QUOTE 2- cups white flour 2- cups whole-wheat flour ½ -cup sugar 2 tsp. Baking soda 1 tsp. Salt 4 tbsp. Butter, chilled 1- cup raisins 1 ½-cups buttermilk A pinch of Caraway Seed Heat the oven to 350 degrees. In a bowl, combine the dry ingredients. Cut in the butter until it is pea-sized. Stir in raisins and buttermilk. Turn the dough onto a floured surface, knead for one minute and shape into a disk. Cut an “X” in the top and bake on a greased baking sheet for 45-50 minutes. Makes one 8-inch-wide loaf. Okay. Then there's this FREAKIN AWESOME fruity jam stuff that tastes really good on it.. mmm.. Fruit Compote QUOTE 1 ½- cup strawberries ½- cup raspberries 1- cup blueberries Add 3 cups sugar to mashed berries. In saucepan, boil ¾ cup water and 1 ¾ oz pectin for 1 minute. Add hot pectin and water to berries and stir for 5 minutes. Put in an airtight container and chill in the refrigerator for a while. Okay, I'll even tell j00 t3h history of it. Yes, I wrote this. It's quite cheesy, but it was for school, so yup. QUOTE 150 years ago it was common to make bread using baking soda rather than yeast in parts of rural Ireland. That is how Irish Soda Bread gets its name. The practice of using baking soda started out of necessity. Yeast won’t make dough rise unless the baker uses “strong” flour, which was scarce in parts of Ireland. Baking soda, however, could be counted on to leaven bread. The baking soda has to be combined with something acidic in order to do its magic. In this case, they decided on buttermilk. Enjoy. ;] My advice:: use a lot of Caraway Seed. It's really good.. unless you don't like the taste, of course, but you really need at leassst a little pinch. Try a seed before you put it in so you can regulate how much you want to have in there. |

QUOTE o.O Why do you call it soda bread :o It's in the little history bit about that they didn't have yeast, so they had to use baking soda and something else to make it rise like yeast would. ![]() |
