“He opens the door.” Who opens the door? We are all essentially opening the door, even those of you who are steadfast in their decision not to. Everyone reading this has opened the door, not physically, but mentally you’ve made the decision. The words do not say “He does not open the door” although they do now, in a different context. When reading, all decision and thought is universal. It is not necessarily forced; you can put the book down and go about your life never having opened the door. But because you continued to read you’ve made that decision. In that sense, we share a singular consciousness.
That is a constant in art. The decision made by the creator (writer, painter, sculptor, musician, etc.) is the decision made by the one observing. It is not a decision made for the observer, they can look away, pay no attention, and not participate. Every decision you make has been made for everyone else, for that matter. Every decision you make in your life changes the decisions of others. For example, you decide to open the door. Your company can then decide what to do from the actions you’ve already taken. They cannot decide for themselves to open the door, it’s already been opened. They can either retreat or re-open. |
