Why do people feel the need to be pessimistic? I mean, what does it do, really? You just feel bad about yourself and then what, does it really make you happy?

I have always been a rather optimistic person - I have confidence in myself, I feel better about myself, I'm more focused, I perform better, I come out on top (most of the time), I feel like a winner. So I can't understand why some people are perpetual assholes.

The worst pessimists are the ones that look out for people left with any glimmer of hope in their souls and stomp on it until there's none left. Fine, you can be a downer on your own time, but to infect someone else with it is just rude, and MEAN.

Hate pessimistic douchebags.

Are you pessimistic or optimistic? Which one is better and why? Discuss.

i like to think i accept reality for the way it is.

"Previous research has also shown that higher expectations of benefit can backfire when you're trying to change a behavior. If you expect that losing weight (or quitting smoking, or exercising, or learning a new skill) will fix a relationship, help you find a job, or get rid daily stress, and it doesn't, then your motivation to maintain the behavior plummets. People who expect the most rewards from changing a behavior — that is, unrealistic rewards — are least likely to succeed."

the virtue of pessimism

I'm a pessimistic douchebag. I don't go out looking for trouble though. I'm not going to hold my tounge if I have something to say, however.

Hrm, well. I feel like I'm a little bit of both, since I do have a lot of confidence in myself and what I'm capable of but sometimes when I just can't get something right or something in my personal life is just screwed up (which I've had plenty of times), I kind of take it out on other people. However, when I do feel pessimistic, I don't actually want to rain down on someone's parade, but I think I may have sometimes done it on accident or unintentionally. shrug.gif

I'm usually more optimistic though. I've learned that I just have to be mature and deal with bullshit, and overall, I feel good that I was just able to handle things in a healthy, calm, and maybe even kind way. I've recently been a lot more optimistic because I've been getting good grades, winning skate competitions, getting a few more clients than usual, and just being able to make it through each day especially when I made it through in an optimistic attitude just makes me even more optimistic. tongue.gif

I think I also feel the most optimistic when it comes to contests, competitions, and/or challenges. They give me something to do, and if I think I can actually do it and be able to give full potential and determination, I feel very optimistic. And even afterward, if some douchebag wants to say some shit or be stupid, I'm even more optimistic because I feel pumped and proud that I was able to make something of myself and even prouder that I can just ignore the moron and move on and just have fun. biggrin.gif

and this is just my opinion, but I like to think that fun is the sole foundation of optimism. :p

Ever since you made this thread Gigi, I noticed how much of a pessimistic douchebag my mom is. She dumps her day on me like everyday when I come home from school, and it's starting to get on my nerves.

maybe she's on her period?

That's menopause. Your momma is going through some tough times, give her a break, yeah? :)

No, the douchebags I'm referring to are mostly dudes. My mom is typically a pretty optimistic person. She dumps on me like every other Asian mom from time to time, but she does it with my best interests at heart. <3 my mom :D

Well, sometimes I am a downer, but only because I'm having a bad day. But yea, I know what you mean... Augh seriously, people think that everything's going so badly for them and that no one else has it worse than them, they're dead wrong. Especially those pessimistic people that think the world revolves around them, and act as nothing good will happen.

lul Gigi did you watch Where The Wild Things Are? If you have, you probably dislike Judith (she's kinda bitchy). :P

No, I'm serious. She's been like this for such a long time. I just usually don't pay attention to it, but she always complains and says she has the most horrible life and nobody has it worse than her. ;___;

I have learned, and am still learning, that there is always somebody that is going to have it worse than you. Why sit and complain about your situation when you aren't going to make an effort to make it better?
