whats an application that scans for open network shares?

my school just suspended my internet saying i either have a worm/trojan or am using an open network scanning applcation. i dnt want to think that ive got a trojan but the only application ive been using is transmission for torrenting. is that what they mean by "application that scans for open network shares" ???

No. A network scanner is a tool like nmap, which looks for open networking ports on a computer.
