File Conversions Options

I'm having a bitch of a time converting this .mkv file to a ps3 supported file format, any ps3 supported file format. I'm trying to use ffmpegX, which has been fine converting every other file, except this one in particular. I'll tell it to convert to divx avi or some shit and it'll either say finished immediately and be a 0kb file or it'll say failed. It's a high quality advent children subbed (not dubbed, f*ck dubbed).

Anyway, any suggestions for either:

A good, preferably free, file converter for OSX.

or

A good website for movie downloads/torrents, i.e. a forum where people post links etc. to good quality ones and also for movies where the chinese people don't have british accents.
