So I'm really running dry on the music as of late, and I thought I turn to you guys for a little music inspiration.

I listen to alternative indie stuff so please no hip-hop, rap, r&b, mainstream stuff. I kinda enjoy that obscure sound.

Just name a few bands you guys like and like names of notable snogs?

Thanks guys.

For sure. I listen to all sorts of different music, makes the listening experience more interesting.

Alt rock indie? I'm honestly not even sure what is considered "indie" these days.

I'll make an attempt to name some musicians.

First and foremost, you should give The Decemberists a try. They are thematic, but insanely interesting to listen to. I will not name individual songs, because they are best served with entire meal.

I've been enjoying Cat Power lately. She's sort of similar to Mazzy Star.

I LOVE Andrew Bird. I have yet to hear anything from him that I have not liked.

Earlimart had brief radio love, but it didn't last.

Just a few for you to nibble on.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have Justice, Decemberists and Death Cab. Have heard of Andrew Bird but never full checked him out. I'll give him a second listen. And Leighton Meester sounds interesting too.

I think rap and hip hop are very... unimaginative and dull. Back in the days of Eminem I was a fan, but the subject matter of those genre nowadays have turned into just sex and drugs in general. I don't want to listen to those kind of lyrics. Plus the same beat going on in the background gets annoying.

Then why say things such as it's unimaginative if you're not somewhat knowledgeable on the subject or done some research on the matter? If you don't like rap, because it just doesn't sound appealing or it isn't to your liking that's cool but to make a bold statement without a solid foundation makes it have zero credibility.

Then enlighten me please because I haven't heard anything good in quite a while. And I'm just taking stabs in the dark here, but why have hip hop artists started using techno and electronica songs as basis for their beats if they're so imaginative?

No good. Sorry I guess I'm just not receptive to it at all. The guitar in the back was kinda nice, but then Jay-Z started rapping in the same tone over and over again. Drum beat was the same throughout too. Got bored halfway in.

That's the one special thing about hip hop. You can basically cross over into other genres as well. I think it's great to use a techno beat since they both were pioneered in a similar fashion. They both originated in the African-American community, so why not put the two together?

Anyways, not sure if you would like this guy, but here's someone you might or might not like. His lyrics are really creative, and a lot of times you have to analyze some of his lines to get a basic understanding of what he is conveying since they have hidden references in them.

This video is hard for me to watch. I can't even pay attention to the song because I'm steady looking at his hair. Throughout the entire video, I'm sitting here like when is this dude going to get the fade he deserves. My favorite part of the video was when he was in the barber's chair getting his hair cut. nod.gif

Alternative indie: your indie alternative to indie music.

I once had this idea for a genre I called "alternative jazz" that fused jazz with an old-school emo/hardcore punk sound, but it didn't pan out. Probably because I sucked at playing the guitar.

Houston has some pretty good local bands. You should look up Tax the Wolf, they're music is great and they're finally making a name for themselves!

Some bands that I've been listening to as of late that you might enjoy are...
  • Yeah Yeah Yeahs (although maybe you've already listened to them a lot) -- Show Your Bones is a good album
  • Ra Ra Riot -- their self-titled album is sure to get your toes tapping
  • Silversun Pickups -- been listening to Carnavas, it's okay
  • Ted Leo and the Pharmacists -- good music, good band
  • Radiohead -- oldie but a goodie; I pulled out OK Computer recently, and it's been fun to listen to
  • Avett Brothers -- I really like their album Emotionalism
  • Sam Roberts -- can't go wrong with Sam
