About as much as Linux, I suppose you could say.

QUOTE(jcp @ May 28 2009, 07:29 PM) *
does unix use the same code that linux uses?

No, in the sense that Linux is a completely different kernel; yes in the sense that most Unixes and Linux are what's called POSIX-compliant (POSIX is a standard for operating system design) and for the most part, they use compatible libraries, so software that compiles under Linux will usually compile under BSD Unix, and vice-versa. (The same mostly goes for Unixes like Sun's Solaris, too.)

Depends on the specific version of Unix, but if it doesn't it's easy enough to compile/install.

It's great for servers, but as a desktop OS it sucks.

I use it for one of my servers, but I would hate using it as a desktop OS.

It's virtually the same as a Linux-based OS at the desktop level. (Linux has slightly better driver support, I s'pose, but only marginally so.)

And community support, and online documentation, and help books.

The list goes on for a while.
