^ Why don't you right-click + save the PDF and view it offline?

I've never had issues with PDF files on XP. Are you sure Adobe Reader is installed correctly?

And version of XP? I've only used XP professional. And what service pack?

Right click PDF link and click on Save As. A lot of times browsers do that because of some sort of error. Have you tried closing the browser then reopening and click the link? If you're on windows, sadly you'll more than likely have to restart your machine.

You could also just, you know, update your FF. We're almost into 3.5 now. :]
