i'm using my own background but when i put it on its on repeat.. do i change the background-repeat:.. or do i change something else?

Setting it to "background-repeat: none;" should work.

yeah the repeat none got it to not repeat, but i want it to cover my whole background.. what do i do to get that?

If you want it to cover the whole screen, you have to make the image larger. It all depends on how large your screen is.
