okay so i know this isnt a nerdy gaming site, (cause im a nerdy gamer har) but this can also pertain to other things, and believe it or not, i think this forum contains an even more intelligent demographic. so i'd like to hear your input on caucasions being the primary protagnists in most entertainment mediums.

now i didn't construct the topic truly giving a damn of how many different races need to be represented. but more so as a pure analysis of our behavior within our society.

the topic is here, which was intitially a response to "why arent there many black protagonists in games"

which is here

not mine: http://forums.gametrailers.com/thread/why-...ereotyp/1018655

and here's my topic

http://forums.gametrailers.com/thread/the-...aucasio/1018797
lol read some of the responses.

At first when I glanced at this, I was concerned I was going to read something about a hidden agenda of video game developers. But you do bring up a very, very interesting point. Certain developers, like Rockstar games, do include protagonists of other ethnicities, but that often comes with the fueling of other stereotypes and stigmas. This isn't an issue I would want pushed, though. Many plots tend to revolve around certain cultures, whether based on reality or fantasy.

yeah, but that also fuels the subconscious implications that consumers have that they have to abide by some sort of abstract race driven characteristics or background when they have to play as a minority.

im getting some pretty nice feeling feedback on this thing tho. and that's VERY hard to do on that forum.

Great post OP, nice to see a post that had some thought put into it. Sadly, this is probably one of the worst places to discuss such things. Anything that requires a minimal amount of comprehension in these forums is destined to be doomed.

This topic should be discussed on more video game forums. Really, it should. But it won't because the biggest arguments on these forums tend to sway toward how much money billion dollar companies are making off of us.

Thanks 1upStem. And while these results, at face value, speak volumes about who are making games, marketing and community development departments at publishing companies understand how to target their largest consumer base. Therefore, the characters we see in games are probably who they think will sell to the largest consumer base. And like you point out, the largest consumer base fancies the blank slate, the slim but voluptuous scantily-clad female, and the typically stereotypical non-white supporting character.

Just don't forget that some group identifications that "fit" under white are also usually stereotyped in games, in particular Italians and Russians.

Simplification is usually a distortion!
thats a few
