I am in 8th Grade Advance Language Arts. So my Language Advance arts teacher is pretty good at doing critical thinking with quotes and reasons, but when we have to do essays, he gives us restricted words we can't use. Examples - FROM NOW ON TO THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR; We can't use the word it, because it is a weak pronoun that takes place over a noun. IF WE DO WE LOSE 10 POINTS OF OUR FINAL GRADE FOR EACH TIME WE USE "IT" IN THE STORY. DOG / CAT STORIES ; We must use five of the senses in a sensory description way for every paragraph we make, and we can't use the words "dog, cat, feline, puppy, kitty." ---------------- I see he's trying to make us better, and if we get our work published with somewhere related to the press (newspaper, t.v,) then we get an automatic "A". :) Plus now we have to keep a portfolio of our work before we go to High School. ---------------- How was or now, your eighth grade LA teacher? |

My teacher wasn't that strict on things like that, but in freshmen year it was basically like that. Just be glad he's preparing you for it before so it won't effect your gpa if you fail a paper.

Yeah, we're like doing 9th grade work since we are advanced. Do you have any tips for "English" for High School? |

How can you not use "it"? You should be crafty and use "that" instead.

My eighth grade teacher was pretty sweet.
She was really nice and I learned more about English from her than any other teacher. To wards the middle of the school year she got pregnant and had to leave and we got stuck with an incredibly stupid teacher. ![]() |

"That" is a good substitute. :) ![]() My eighth grade teacher was pretty sweet. She was really nice and I learned more about English from her than any other teacher. He says it's a weak word, and many people rely on it. "That" is a good substitute. :) ![]() Well, yeah, because it makes sense to. Like in my preceding sentence, I used "it"; how else could I express my thoughts? My eighth-grade English teacher was cool, and told corny jokes. xD He explained the literary present (the tense you write in when describing literary events) by telling us to think of it as a moving photograph in Harry Potter. Like, even though the photograph shows a past moment, the people in them still wave to you... It's hard to explain now, and it was almost four years ago, so yeah. |

I wish my teachers did stuff like this, I'm not very good at writing papers. I can pass any writing test a teacher or the state will throw at me but I personally don't feel like I'm up where I should be.
![]() Although I must say I don't use the word "it" very often. I don't think it would be that difficult. |

You would be a best-selling author or article person. damn not even my freshman english class was that strict though he says he wants us to "BE READY." although he does pull humor to the side. tomatoes, what did you do in 8th grade language arts? |

Your teacher sounds awful. I could not live with those rules. What, are you supposed to call a dog by its scientific name? There are only so many ways to say "dog"!
Seriously, it is not like that in high school. I hated all that crap that 8th grade teachers told you about teachers being stricter in HS. None of it was true. The teachers in highschool are way more laidback then the lame junior high teachers. |

They probably wanted us to keep continue our work, since if we slack off, the teachers won't care since they're doing their job. ( Maybe they even act it out, to catch people off guard. ![]() Not really, and the whole classes grades shifted one letter down. :\ That must have sucked. What' did you learn in eighth mackenziee? |

Helps? well, since my l.a. teacher is strict, we have to do 4 essays minimum for every 6 weeks ( that's when we get our report cards) kinda strict huh? |

Wow, 8th grade was like my shittiest and funnest year, all mixed together. The teachers were mad shitty but the fun was.. fun.
My English teacher was sooo .. ugh. Lol, she forgot a lot, and she barely really taught, not in a fun way that made me WANT to learn. I'd hate to bag on her, considering I kind of pity her for teaching all us kids who pretty much hated her, but, all she did was give us worksheets. Nothing fun. No group work, class work, and discussions were limited. It was very very easy to pass. As long as you finished the worksheets, you were set. Because of that class, I cringe everytime I see a worksheet. UGH. It was like WORKSHEETS EVERY SINGLE DAY! And then maybe a class discussion once in a blue moon. T________T I'd have to say my 7th grade English class was a bit more challenging and way more fun. |

Oh, my 8th grade LA teacher...where is James? It was quite an interesting experience.
Strange choice of words to make you avoid, though. Typically when teachers do that the goal is to avoid the passive voice. |
