you don't need to use PHP to do that. if you're on a server using apache, you can just use mod_rewrite in an .htaccess file. with lighttpd or NGINX, you can do the same thing by adjusting the configuration file.

i don't even think PHP can handle rewriting file extensions. that's something for ruby on rails or django or webpy.

You can do it with a framework like Cake PHP, but if you're using vanilla PHP, you have to use mod_rewrite to make friendly URLs.
