Ok So im curious to know if anyone has ever gotten caught by your internet provider or whatever from torrenting things.
so about near the beginning of the school year of 07-08 i torrented a bit. Not much just 1-2 episodes once a week. My dad was a bit of a heavy downloader, he downloaded movies mainly for him and my mom to watch. (he didnt sell them at all) Though one night around 1am on a school night my dad comes into my room saying that Charter ,which is our internet provider, sent an e-mail saying that they have been watching his computer and such and what he has been downloading and gave him a firm warning. We dont know which computer it was since all of our computers in the house are in a way connected to one so we can transfer to each. So after that i havent downloaded anything since. I want to...but i cant. but overall im just wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them before and if so did you keep downloading? I know my friend had this happen to him and his dad but they keep downloading. We havent since, or from what i know of. I think the bastard is downloading things behind my back. Also are there any programs that work to hide IP adresses? Also Also im not sure if this is in the right section. And if theres another post like this Sorry but i swear i did the search and didnt find anything else on this situation |

They can't legally do anything about you downloading torrents. That has to be brought up with the owner of whatever you're stealing.
Also, proxy. |

What an invasion of privacy. It's messed up that they would notice a thing like that (they have a lot of customers) and also odd that they would call you and "warn" you about it. I use torrents a lot, because I'm cheap and they're easy.

Yeah i did think it was a bit of invasion of privacy
especially since the email said that they would scan my computer or whatever. Im not sure how true it was but it was fun spending the hour of my school night trying to delete all evidence of the torrent. |

I mean my dad didnt download that much maybe 1-2 movies plus shows but he also did them more at the night when the servers were more clear which is probably the reason why we got caught |

My dad downloaded a bit everyday and had long downloads. I would just becareful. I mean its a pretty big coincidence that they targeted us out of a few hundred possible people. just bad luck |

Wow I've never gotten caught for torrents. Of course if I was at school, that would be a different story because they will recognize that kind of connection when you're on a school network.
However, if you're too scared, you can always use IRC. IRC is actually really fast, as long as you are able to find the right person to download from. I seriously was getting speeds of 1000KB (1MB) a second for a 700 MB drama file. 700/60 = 11-ish minutes, which was really fast considering I am downloading from another person (or well, XDCC packlist from a bot). IRC is like a chatroom where you can download files from people, but I don't think anyone has gotten caught for that yet... ? |

hm. I should try to convince my dad to download again. Maybe or to just change your internet service provider. Something like Comcast or Verizon fios would be good they have millions of customers so I am pretty sure that it would be least likely to single you out. |

if you're with a cable company, they'll be monitoring the amount you download and upload. they know when you UPLOAD too much for too long. the reason they know you're downloading is 'cause you upload while you download via torrents, and usually you'd leave the computer just downloading/uploading for hours. technically, you're allowed unlimited download, but they have limits on uploads.
when they realize you're an uber torrenter, they'll send you a warning, and they might even cap your speed. |

I use that instead of downloading movies, not always effective, but better than dying. I only download CDs, but I reformatted, so blah to them. I use peer guardian though, it should help I suppose. |

I had a co-worker who got caught pirating Mac software (or it may have been Tiger itself) - he was caught because he was seeding. He was contacted by Apple and had to apologize and promise never to do it again. xD

That's gay how they invade your privacy like that. It's not really invasion of privacy per se. ISPs don't (or can't) examine exactly what you're doing online; instead, they just watch for traffic patterns. For example, if you're downloading hundreds of megabytes of data a day, and much of it overnight, and you're also uploading hundreds of megabytes of data, and you're not doing it over Port 80, you're probably using BitTorrent. |

I've heard about this, it's just another way through which they're trying to crack down on illegal downloading. However, your ISP cannot cancel your internet for it.
