By taking classes at community colleges, you mean joint enrollment? And if you know you need to raise your GPA, well, then raise it. Tung's right, these really aren't questions you need to be asking us. I can answer half of them, but you're better off talking to your counselor about all of this, because some of it is going to vary, and you don't really seem to understand what you're even talking about as far as a lot of this is concerned.

Can you take more than one class at a Community college?
Of course! Would all of those classes be considered AP classes? No, if you take tham at a community college they're not considered AP, but you get college credit for them. What kind of classes are considered as AP classes? I think this only applies to classes your high school offers that are college-level. If you take the class at a community college, then unless it's a required class for you to graduate (high school), it counts as college credit. If it is a required class, then you get high school credit for it. Can you take classes at a Community college over the summer? Of course! Can you take classes at the community college and get high school credits for it? If it's a required class for you to graduate high school, you'll get high school credit for it. Otherwise, depending on the class and the college, you may or may not get college credit for it. For example, if you took a basket weaving class or something (yeah I made that up just now), I don't think most colleges would give you credit. How many AP classes Minimum is needed for UCLA? It's not required to take AP classes to get into any college (my sister got into all the UCs she applied to without taking any APs at all, but she did College Advantage her senior year). They do like to see you challenge yourself/take harder classes, and if you do well in them it's a potential GPA boost. If you feel like you can handle it, then go ahead and take it, but if you can't, then don't. It's better to take an easier class and get a good grade than to take an AP class and fail miserably. What's the Minimum GPA? You could probably look it up on their website. What should I do in order to MAKE SURE I get into UCLA? Or atleast USC? Like loquat, I was under the impression that USC was harder to get into. Just keep up your grades, do extracurricular activites, volunteer... |

Can you take more than one class at a Community college?
Yup! I'm a soon to be senior in high school & I've taken classes at a local CC just to get more credits, make up credits, etc. Would all of those classes be considered AP classes? Nope. You do get college credit for them. What kind of classes are considered as AP classes? Classes that are considered AP are usually labeled "AP" when you sign up for classes. They can range from AP English Lit to AP Biology to AP Music Theory. With these classes, if you get a certain score on the AP test for that subject, you can get college credit/hours for it. Can you take classes at a Community college over the summer? Yup! I'm currently enrolled at my local CC for precalc. Can you take classes at the community college and get high school credits for it? Yeah, if you take a class at a CC that's required for graduation (say PE, English, Math, History, etc.) and you get a passing grade you can get high school credit. How many AP classes Minimum is needed for UCLA? There isn't an exact "minimum" but for UCLA, normally to get accepted, you have to take at least some sort of college prep class, but it all depends. But if you're gonna take an AP class, you have to know you can handle the course load. Say...if you think that you're gonna take AP Government and get a C, but know you can get a B or A in regular government, take the regular class. What's the Minimum GPA? It all really depends. I've had friends that have gotten accepted into UCLA for the 08-09 year that have had a 2.5 and another that had a 4.4 GPA. Granted, my friend with the 4.4 is going Pre-Med and the one with the 2.5 is majoring in dance and is a guy, so that's probably a main reason he got in. It all just depends. What should I do in order to MAKE SURE I get into UCLA? Or atleast USC? Just keep your grades up and do well on your SATs/ACTs. Those definitely matter the most in college apps, especially with this upcoming year & the last year since there are so many students applying compared to years before. If you're applying this year, good luck on your college apps! |

You can't keep running from what you're trying to find. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Group: Official Member Posts: 5,030 Joined: Oct 2004 Member No: 54,096 |
Umm, I can't answer all of those questions, but I can answer some. I'm in Running Start, so I'm dual enrolled in high school and the local community college.
- You can take more than one class at community college... I don't see why you wouldn't be able to, unless the schedules conflicted. - As far as I know, AP isn't the same as community college credit, but they both are able to transfer to full time 4 year universities as credit anyway, depending on the class. They usually have charts saying what they transfer as (sometimes as only electives, sometimes not), but you can ask the school counselors. - You can definitely take CC classes over the summer. - At my school, certain CC courses count as credit for requirements. Ex. Political Science 101 at CC counts as a required Senior Issues credit from high school. |

I am still confused as to whether you want to consider entering to UCLA/USC for 4 years (right after graduating from high school) or if you want to transfer in after 2 years in community college.
In any case, UCLA is know to reject a lot of applicants (not transfers, but direct applicants straight from high school), so I recommend that you try to bring up your GPA. Your SAT score is also a factor. As for community college, if you do take them and you are able to get into UCLA, your CC GPA will not count, as it will only count as pass/no pass units. Therefore, it will not strength or weaken your university GPA. |

Can you take more than one class at a Community college?
Yes, if you can manage it. Would all of those classes be considered AP classes? No, but they are considered to be AP level. What kind of classes are considered as AP classes? They should be labeled when you sign up for your classes. They're college level classes that are taught in high school. Can you take classes at a Community college over the summer? Yes. You might need to get approval from your home school though. Can you take classes at the community college and get high school credits for it? No. My answer's different from the other two who answered, but I know it's a definite no for my school, so it depends, I guess. How many AP classes Minimum is needed for UCLA? There is no minimum. Take as many as you can handle if you want. What's the Minimum GPA? There is no set GPA, but the lower you go, the higher you need to score on your SAT. That doesn't mean if you have a 4.0, you could just blow your SAT's. But you're gonna have to work way harder if your GPA is lower. I have a list of the GPA's somewhere in my folder, but I can't find it at the moment. What should I do in order to MAKE SURE I get into UCLA? Or atleast USC? There is no way to MAKE SURE, but you have to keep your grades up and do well on your SAT/ACT's. Doing EC activities helps, but don't go crazy and join every club on campus and put it all down in your application. Choose a couple and be dedicated to them. |

Can you take classes at the community college and get high school credits for it?
Most commonly yes a community college credit can be a high school credit. Here in NC, you can actually go to the community college during one of your high school periods and just come back to the campus when your done if you have another class at the high school. Also in some states they are starting things called "The Edge" when you take classes at your community college to start college while in high school. Really it depends by state and schools, so I would really go and ask your high school counselor these questions. Can you take more than one class at a Community college? Yes you can, really it all comes down to your schedule and if your counselor thinks you can take it. Most commonly you can take up to 12 credit hours so typically around 3-4 classes, but if your a high school student as well they'll probably only allow up to 2. Would all of those classes be considered AP classes? No, the only AP classes you'll be able to take are through your high school. And when you sign up for your classes it should have AP by the name. Can you take classes at a Community college over the summer? Yes, you can. Community colleges have a Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters I suppose you could call it. You will need to get a college catalog and see what classes you would be interested in first off and see if there are any prerequisites for those classes. Also you're more than likely going to need an official copy of your high school transcripts so when you meet up with a counselor at the college they can evaluate them. |
