It's Earth Week. Are you taking measures to be greener?

I'm a HUGE meat eater and I'm not going to change that any time soon (aka at all). However, i would love to change everything else that I can.

I took my ecological footprint quiz. I scored a 22. T.T So not the greenest person in the world.

You can take yours here: http://www.conservation.org/act/live_green...ofootprint.aspx

What do you do to be greener on a day-to-day basis?

-I recycle
-I use a Brita filter and a reusable Nalgene bottle type thing (so i don't really buy bottled water)

That's about it.

yessss... most recently i purchased the reusable bags that they sell at publix for when i go grocery shopping. i always try to do my part by recycling, never buying foam products, not buying water bottles, buying recycled goods, and things along those lines.

currently at work and the link you posted won't load, but i will do it when i get home & post my score....

i took this survey to see how much electricity im wasting, i use less than average =D
but that may be mostly because
-we dont own a car
-i use a laptop
-flourecent lights all the way
-and we dont by bottled water. like, not consistently at least.

I've always taken measures to be greener. The quiz page you posted won't load when I try to reach the fourth page, but I took an eco-footprint quiz on a different site and got a 15.

I got a 49. It's kind of annoying, though, because a lot of that doesn't apply to me. Snowmobiles? hahahaha. For a lot of it I just applied things I know my mom does at home.

I am really really good about recycling. Two minutes ago, in fact, I saw a water bottle and a Monster can in the trash, and it pissed me off enough that I put them in recycling. Goddamn, the recycling bin and trash can were only 4 feet apart. Is it really that difficult?

I would attempt it... but sadly I'm a hypocrite as I don't own a hybrid vehicle =\

Plus even though it helps a lil... Global warming has been crapped on... doesn't hold enough evidence on any level. It's a natural process we can't control. Mother nature > humanity

So, if you guys haven't noticed, this years theme is going green and doing things that are more friendly to our planet earth. Have you changed any of your ways? (Lightbulbs, less plastic bags, etc) Or has the going green thing had no effect on you?

As for me:
-I tried my best to stop using plastic bags and carry things in my backpack instead.
-Unplug my sidekick charger when I'm not charging it (pinch.gif well its something...)
-Don't eat pork or beef.

What about you guys?

Urgh, unless the US and China commit to 'going green', there's nothing much the rest of the world can do save to put a tiny time delay on the inevitable.

The UK has some ridiculous rules regarding recyling. We have three separate bins - one for garden rubbish, one for household, one for biodegradable and a blue bag for paper waste per household. If these bins are but an inch overfilled, the homeowner is fined. If the council do some snooping and find that we have put cardboard in the household waste bin, we are fined. Same goes for the rest.

Rubbish collections are fortnightly. Crazy, if you think about 5 people trying to share the capacity of one household waste bin for two weeks. Maggots are a serious problem in most and rats are also encouraged.

Recycling and going green is, IMO, just another way for the government to control us and keep a lid on dwindling finite resources. I'm not into conspiracy theories much, but the recent ferver over our environment can only spell a serious concern over our three fuels (gas, oil, coal) that are running out.

Whoops, that was a minor rant and probably belongs in debate or locked in a padded cell under sedation.

On a more positive note, we do use low-energy lightbulbs, recycle when we're forced to, switch off lights, re-use carriar bags and put the washing on 'eco-dry'.

Not that it makes any difference wink.gif

Well, at least theres still some stores that are deciding to go green. Like Ikea, they charge 5 cents for everytime you use a plastic bag. whistling.gif

Ah, at least the UK enforces the whole recycling thing. I'm pretty sure everyone here in New York just dumps everything in the same bin.

Yeah, 2008 seems to be the big year for going green. This should have happened a long while back. (Pst, this topic is really similar to this Earth Week one.)

Anyway, yeah. I always unplug my cell phone charger and hairdryer when I'm not using them. You'd be surprised at how much power can be wasted even when you're not charging your phone, PC, etc. I always unplug my brother's laptop charger since he always leaves it connected to the socket. _dry.gif And I'm going to start unplugging my computer overnight. I try not to use plastic bags when I'm buying something if it fits in my bag.

Enforce being the operative word wink.gif

And hells yes, going back to my Florida visit we found FOUR BINS in the garage which were collected TWICE a week. That's nuts.

I dunno, I'm not buying any of this whole 'go green' thing.

Haha, Jane, don't have so little faith in New Yorkers!...although you're probably right about that. I keep my garbage and recyclables separate, though. Paper, plastic, and glass go in different bins in my house.

i haven't done anything new this year that i didn't already do. i recycle, unplug stuff, use the longer lasting light bulbs everywhere, have a hybrid. (not really with the intention of saving the world, but so i get better mileage, same thing)i don't leave lights on or whatever, but i rarely use the lights anyway in most rooms. ummmmm... my appliances have the energy star. yeah, that's all i can think of off the top of my head.

It is. Being vegetarian/vegan (or pescetarian, in Jane's case) helps the environment because it takes a lot of energy and produces a lot of pollution when livestock is killed in factories. By not eating meat, you're helping to reduce the pollution created, or something like that.
