This goes out to everybody who has parents or grandparents or any form of relative that doesn't speak english too well. Do you ever find yourself speaking "engrish" with them (even though we can speak fluent english) because you think that they won't understand if you do speak in english?

For example:

Grandma: Where you go today?
Jane: I play basketbon with fren.

I alternate between languages when talking to my parents, but I don't give myself a fobby accent.

When i talk to my grandma, who's from poland, its hard to understand her because of her accent and stuff.
And sometimes im like trying to put a polish accent on my speech and i sound really weird.

Haha, Christy. I don't know how to say "satellite" either. But yay, you speak Cantonese! =)

My grandparents don't speak English, so I always have to speak Cantonese with them. With my mom, she's fluent in English, so I don't have to resort to Engrish.

Fortunately, both my parents speak fluently in English.

My Chinese isn't so great, but I know enough.
When I speak with my grandparents, I speak what I know (Like Christy)

Same deal here.
I wish I could speak more Chinese.
My conversations with my grandparents always die off.
I say the same things every time.
"How are you?"
"How's the weather doing?"
"I miss you."
"How's grandpa/great grandma/aunt/other relative?"

After using those lines in different orders, I run out of things to say, rofl.

LMAO! that's what i say to my grandparents in china. it's really hard to understand them since they speak in heavy heavy canto accents or whatever and im always like; *covers phone* ; "dad, what's '*bad imitation of grandparents*'?" and he explains to me and i go to the phone like; "OHHHH! I'm fourteen" or something like that. xD

I KNOW. Rofl, I'm constantly asking my dad for help.
I remember when I was younger, he'd like whisper what to say ;D

I need to learn how to speak more Canto.

Haha. Luckily both my parents speak English. But when I'm with my grandparents I have to speak Spanish because they don't speak English. I don`t mind though. _smile.gif

CANTOOOOOOOOOOO!!
I really wish i spoke it really well and also pay attention in class so I could read and write it! ):

But I definitely know what you're talking about in that heavy canto accent. Its like "Toy-san wa" or something right? I usually just nod and smile cause i can't understand them haha.

But my mom makes me speak chinese in my house but she knows what i'm talking about since i say it in english first. But when it comes to talking to my dad.. I'm like uhh, umm and like i bring the friken dictionary out just to show him what i mean. hahahaha.

i fail.

My friend doesn't speak Cantonese very well (or, at all), but that's all her grandma can speak. And it's accented Cantonese too, but I'm not sure where she's from. Anyway, it's sad because she needs my help when talking to her own grandmother. It always takes me like 5 seconds to realize what she's saying because of the accent. I talk to her in normal Cantonese though, but much slower and much more cheerful that usual.

With my mom, though, when I'm trying to explain something, sometimes I attempt to speak Cantonese so she can understand better, but I usually give up and speak English really fast. Thank goodness that my mom can understand my English well. Conversational Cantonese is no problem though.

lol; no not toy san wah; that's like taiwanese or something no?

Toisanese (aka Taishanese) is a Cantonese dialect. My grandpa sometimes speaks using it, and I can usually understand him, but it just sounds weird because I'm so accustomed to standard Cantonese. My grandma and mom can speak it too. It'd sound so weird coming out of my own mouth since I've never tried.

Sometimes I speak half a sentence in English and the other half in German. Deunglish. I have a lot of family members who speak German, and we all know English, so it doesn't really matter. shrug.gif It creeps my friends out when I speak under my breath in German.

I speak toisanese! _smile.gif Didn't think anyone else really did.

Whenever I'm on the phone with my grandparents we say exactly the same things... Hi, how are you, have you eaten yet?...

my mom understands english, but hates speaking it. and when she does speak it, it's hilarious. like when she's driving and something annoys her she almostt always burst out with "CHET!" meaning shxt. it's the funniest. she prefers we not speak english to her but when we do it more like spaniglish.. "ma woo-airs la cosa dats for cleening?" laugh.gif it's terrible.
