![]() ![]() this is what they said: QUOTE A 5-calorie stick of gum is less fattening than a bag of chips. And it might even help suppress the appetite. QUOTE A television ad that runs during "The Biggest Loser" sums up the new promise with a memorable tag line "Go from 'nice gut' 'to 'nice butt.' " The ad also calls Extra gum the "long-lasting 5-calorie snack to help reveal the new you." isnt gum bad for your teeth or something? i cant think of gum as a snack.. ![]() have you guys seen the commercial to this? or heard about this? edit; if someone can fix the topic title i spelled lose wrong. i messed up. ![]() |

Sounds like a daft bit of marketing to me. If anything, I've always thought gum makes you more hungry because you're chewing and salivating and nothing is going into your stomach.

Meh... in all honesty, gum was the best invention for working out your jaw muscles, cold turkeying (not a word, I know) cigarettes, and temporary breath refresher.
By no means is starvation the best way to lose weight. That's a horrible approach to losing weight. |

Chewing gum helps you decrease your cravings in carbs. It's not like it's going to make you lose weight if you chew it and eat a ton of shit at the same time.

yeah..not a big fan of that commercial. i sometimes suppress the urge to eat by popping in a piece of gum (because the minty-ness of it makes cravings go away for me), but it's not at all because i want to lose weight.

I think those commercials are stupid. I chew gum a lot, and to me it isn't a snack. A snack is something that I put in my mouth, chew, and swallow.

actually, gum makes you gain weight.
when you chew gum, you salivate. so, your digestive system is preparing to break down some food. however, youre obviously not swallowing your gum. yet your stomach begins crunching away and eventually you get hungry. hence, you eat =] lol ![]() |

That method doesn't hold any water, whatsoever. If you were to enter catabolism without actual nutrients to oxidize, most of it would be muscle, as a result of proteolysis. The next time actual food is eaten, muscle tissue would continue to deteriorate while lipase enzymes are triggered to convert the fatty acids into triacylglycerols as a survival mechanism, which means more fat would be stored than normal.
In other words, all of these little gimmicky tricks to avoid hunger are counterproductive. |

Yeah, it just sounds like a shitty marketing campaign to me.
One of my friends in school bought some kind of "weight loss gum" that she's supposed to chew after every meal and it speeds up your matabolism. There's really no logic to that at all. And, even on the completely off chance that it works, as soon as she stops chewing the gum (like, when she runs out), she'll gain all the weight back because her metabolism would slow down again. [/slightly off-topic] In short, any kind of weight-loss gum is pointless, in my oppinion. It won't work. |

It's the act of putting something in your mouth and chewing that causes your system to prepare for digestion. Your body starts to think that the next logical step would be for you to swallow and have something to break down.
And I don't think anyone would really truly believe that the gum itself would be used as a weight-loss product. It's marketed to those who chew gum in the first place that are weight-conscious. |

Again, "preparing for digestion" does squat. Without actual nutrients to oxidize, you would be burning muscle through proteolysis, not adipose tissue/fat.
That's the exact reason why exercising before breakfast fails. When the body is in a deficit, it oxidizes amino acids from the protein that you eat, which leads to oxidizing the muscle tissue itself for energy, or muscle catabolism. Glycolysis is much more efficient than other oxidization processes, so the presence of nutrients will spare protein stores that your body would otherwise catabolize. |

That's why I summed it up with, "In other words, all of these little gimmicky tricks to avoid hunger are counterproductive." Everything after that is just reiterating my point, so going into further detail is how to further develop it.

Hm, I kind of meant that chewing gum just makes you think you're hungry because your system/body thinks that you're gonna eat.
But yes, what you said too. lol. The only reason I could think of behind it being marketed as low-calorie/weight-loss stuff is that it has less calories than other gum products and is something to keep your mouth occupied for those who eat habitually. I guess smokers fall under this category, just needing something in the mouth. Hm, I get the feeling I fail anyway. |
